    USC's Information Sciences Institute (ISI), a unit of the university's Viterbi School of Engineering, is a world leader in the research and development of advanced artificial intelligence, information processing, high-performance computing, computer hardware design and manufacturing, cybersecurity, and communications and networking technologies. ISI's 400 faculty, professional staff and graduate students carry out transformative research at three distinct locations – Marina Del Rey, CA; Arlington, VA; and Waltham, MA.

    *This position is located in Waltham, MA. Remote and hybrid work schedules are available.*

    Positioned at the helm of technological advancements, the Application Specific Intelligent Computing(ASIC) Research Lab operates within the prestigious University of Southern California's Information Sciences Institute (USC's ISI). Celebrating 51 years of ground-breaking research and innovation, including fostering the inception of the first DNS for the internet, ISI has been a cornerstone in computing advancements, pioneering in a multitude of sectors including artificial intelligence, computational systems, emerging technologies, and cybersecurity.

    We are looking for a passionate and skilled Research Scientist to join our team in the field of computational hardware technology development. An individual with a specialization in VLSI Design, Circuit Simulation, or Foundry Interface, are encouraged to join us in carving the landscape of integrated chip solutions for advanced computing. Your efforts will also contribute to the initiatives of California Defense Ready Electronics and Microdevices Superhub (California DREAMS), a vital force behind the adoption and demonstration of advanced RF and 5G/6G technologies, under the guiding force of the Department of Defense ME Commons Program.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Lead research initiatives and proposals to create and develop innovative photonic devices and circuits leveraging materials like silicon, silicon nitride, AlN, BaTiO2, and groundbreaking 2D materials, which are central to bolstering artificial intelligence hardware applications.
    • Pioneer in developing and implementing emerging computing models like neuromorphic computing and quantum photonics computing, capitalizing on the potentials of these innovative devices and circuits.
    • Design and simulation of novel computing projects, incorporating non-von Neumann computing methodologies.
    • Forge ahead in the domain of photonic integrated circuit simulations, utilizing first-principle calculations or commercial tools, and setting the benchmark for future advancements in the industry.
    • Spearhead comprehensive benchmark analyses on device-circuit-system levels, emphasizing power-performance-area metrics for AI accelerators utilizing unconventional computing paradigms.
    • Establish robust ties with semiconductor foundries, focusing on state-of-the-art technology nodes, and actively participating in the physical design and troubleshooting of fabricated chips.
    • Regularly disseminate research findings through international conferences and prestigious journals while fostering the generation of intellectual property through patentable ideas and solutions.
    • Actively collaborate with industry partners and foundries to further technology advancements and transitions.

    Position Specific Requirements:

    • Educational Qualification: A Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a closely related field, with a proven track record in research and substantial experience in the design, fabrication, and characterization of PIC.
    • Technical Proficiency: Hands-on experience with PIC design and electronic-photonic layout tools, along with familiarity with silicon, silicon nitride, and novel 2D materials-based photonic devices.
    • Industry Experience: – Demonstrable experience in the design and layout of electronic-photonic integrated circuits in commercial foundries, with a desirable background in optical and electrical characterization techniques and advanced packaging methods.
    • Communication Skills: Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, fostering effective collaboration both individually and within a multi-disciplinary team environment.
    • Personal Attributes: Robust interpersonal and organizational skills, complemented by experience in program management and a proven ability to multitask effectively.
    • Professional Standards: A steadfast commitment to meeting business deadlines, paired with a capacity for benchmarking and articulating the value proposition of integrated circuits.
    • Industry Integration: Valuable prior experience in facilitating technology transfers to the industry.

    The annual base salary range for this position is $98,837 – $110,000. When extending an offer of employment, the University of Southern California considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal, state and local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, as well as external market and organizational considerations.

    Minimum Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate

    Minimum Experience: 5 years

    Minimum Field of Expertise: Directly related education and experience in research specialization with highly advanced knowledge of equipment, procedures, analysis methods, principles, theories and concepts. Demonstrated leadership in developing new ideas and ability to publish in appropriate academic and practitioner outlets. Demonstrated independent thinking and leadership in scholarly writing according to such criteria as: first authored publications, conceptual leadership in the development of publications generated alone or with others, writing of first drafts of publications and/or single authored publications.
