Bridge Inspector - Norfolk - Moffatt & Nichol

Moffatt & Nichol specializes in large complex waterfront infrastructure projects and is recognized as one of the worldwide leaders in this field. We are actively searching for a Bridge Inspector (with an Engineering degree) to join our Raleigh, NC (preferred), Norfolk or Richmond, VA office. As the successful new hire, you will perform bridge inspections. You will join our team which provides inspection services across the State of North Carolina, Virginia and the Southeastern United States. The principal function of this position is to evaluate bridges through above ground engineering inspections. You will utilize Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and National Highway Institute (NHI) criteria while inspecting bridges via buckets, snoopers, boats, ladders, safety harness, and other equipment.

Duties and responsibilities:

• Partners with other professionals and departments to gather information for projects
• Works collaboratively with all members of the inspection group
• Conducts inspections and assists in supervision of site investigations as needed
• Utilizes data entry/manipulation and technical writing skills for the preparation and review of inspection reports, proposals, etc.
• Provides quality assurance reviews of inspection reports
• Performs other duties as required

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering; Civil or Structural is strongly preferred
• Engineer in Training certificate (strongly preferred)
• 2 to 10 years of bridge inspection experience
• NHI/NBIS Team Leader qualifications or the ability to meet the Team Leader qualifications within 6 months is required
• FHWA-NHI certification required
• FHWA-NHI certification desired
• SNBI experience desired
• Field requirements are 5 days per week in North Carolina, Virginia or the Southern United States. Hours may vary due to weather or daylight. Some weekends may be required.
• Availability and willingness to travel overnight and for approximately 2 weeks per month is required
• Willingness to work from Moffatt & Nichol's Raleigh, NC, Norfolk or Richmond, VA offices on non-field days
• Valid driver's license in good standing
• Experience with NCDOT WIGINS software desired but not required
• Selected candidate must consent to and pass a post-offer/pre-employment drug screening
• All new hires will be required to successfully complete and pass a pre-employment (post offer) background check in compliance with NIST

Working conditions:

Field work will be performed outdoors across the State of North Carolina, Virginia and Southeastern United States in all seasons. This work will typically require overtime during these field weeks and will be followed by in-office report corrections/submittals of the inspection reports.

Physical requirements:

Majority of work is field based which may necessitate navigating unpaved or natural terrain while carrying equipment. Inspection equipment such as ladders and boats are sometimes necessary and the ability to lift and use this equipment with assistance can be expected. Under bridge access equipment is sometimes used in conjunction with safety harnesses for fall protection. Enduring inclement weather will also be required.
