    Primary Function of Organizational Unit :

    The Department of Chemistry currently has 26 full-time faculty members with interests that span the traditional fields of chemistry (analytical, biochemistry, inorganic, organic, and physical) with numerous cross-cutting collaborations with faculty from the Departments of Biology, Physics, Psychology, and the Brody School of Medicine. We are a student-centered department that offers a Bachelor of Arts (B.A. Chemistry), two Bachelor of Science degrees (B.S. Chemistry and B.S. Biochemistry (Chemistry Concentration)), a Masters of Science degree, and a Doctoral Program (Interdisciplinary Doctoral Program in Biology, Biomedicine, and Chemistry). The Department of Chemistry has about 200 majors currently. The department has a strong history of high-quality teaching and mentoring, recognized with numerous teaching awards, and a strong profile in professional development, workforce development and best educational practices.

    Job Duties :

    The Department of Chemistry at East Carolina University seeks applications to fill a position as a Lab Manager beginning on August 16, 2024. This temporary Exempt Professional Staff (non-faculty) position is for the 2024 Fall semester, with the possibility of subsequent appointments.

    The Lab Manager duties are related to General and Organic Chemistry laboratory safety and operations to be carried out throughout the appointment. These duties include managing student workers in the preparation and setup of the labs, identifying and procuring equipment and chemical supplies, and monitoring instrumentation being used in the General and Organic Chemistry courses. The Lab Manager will also teach one section in the general chemistry and/or organic chemistry lab sequences as appropriate.

    The successful applicant will be someone who is collaborative and enjoys working in partnership with faculty, staff, and teaching assistants to deliver a high-quality educational experience to ECU students; safety-minded by ensuring all environmental health and laboratory regulations are carefully followed; conscientious by conserving chemicals and reagents to maximize budgetary resources; and a dedicated leader, providing mentorship and encouragement to all emerging scientists.

    Minimum Education/Experience :

    Minimum qualifications include a MS in Chemistry or closely related field from an appropriately accredited institution.

    Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education :

    Preferred qualifications for the position include: (a) a Ph.D. in Chemistry or closely related field, (b) experience in management of General Chemistry or Organic Chemistry laboratories, and experience in teaching and mentoring.
