    Description

    Summary:

    This individual fills the role of surgical technologist in the Operating Room. Surgical Technologist I understands and demonstrates the knowledge of surgical procedures. Assure all supplies and equipment are available for the procedure and in working condition. Confirm and/or assemble sterile instruments for use correctly. Anticipate the needs of the surgeon. They assist in keeping accurate account of medications, sharps, instruments, and sponges. They are responsible for maintaining and monitoring the sterile field.

    Responsibilities:

    (20%)* Assesses neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patient and physician needs as they relate to each operative procedure.

    (20%)* Plans scrub activities based upon the specific procedure being performed.

    (20%)* Implements activities to assist the physician during operative procedures in an organized manner.

    (20%)* Evaluates the cleanliness/safety of the unit as well as the number and amount of supplies required to maintain adequate levels within the department.

    (20%)* Self-Management

    • Holds self accountable for delivery of responsible patient care, demonstrates effective communication skills and interpersonal relationships.
    • Assumes responsibility for own continued development and assists with the development of other staff members.

    OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Operates equipment as outlined on orientation checklists, policy and procedures. Participates in equipment inservices and competencies as they relate to role expectations.

    Performs job skills outlined on orientation checklist as they relate to role expectations.

    Certifications and Licensures:

    BLS - Basic Life Support

    Required Equivalent Experience - Within 1 month of hire or transfer

    SURGTECH - Cert Surgical Technologist

    Required Equivalent Experience

    Required Education:
    High School Diploma or GED

    Other Information:

    EXPERIENCE, TRAINING AND SKILLS:

    Successful completion of a Surgical Technology program, plus must be certified as a surgical technologist with National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) or equivalent. Certification must remain current during employment.

    Ability to respond to call within 15 to 20 minutes of notification and adjust to surgical call schedule.

    PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

    Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as, trauma, grief and death.

    Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position.

    Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description.

    Overall vision and hearing is necessary with or without assisted device(s).

    Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time. May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching.

    Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material. Must follow MyMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing as required.

    Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake.

    Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling. May require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis.

    Physical Demand Level: Light. Must be able to occasionally (0-33% of the workday) lift or carry 11-20 lbs., frequently (34-66% of the workday) 10 lbs. and or Walk/Stand/Push/Pull of Arm/Leg controls.
