    Job DescriptionIndependence Community College (ICC) is seeking applications for the tenure-track position of Associate Professor of Visual Art and Design. Independence Community College, a small, rural, residential community college in southeast Kansas, serves approximately 1,000 full- and part-time students each year.     Position Summary

    Responsible for performing a wide variety of duties, including the following: teaching undergraduate visual art and design courses as part of both general education offerings and the established Associate of Arts in Visual Arts degree track (Art Appreciation, Drawing I and II, 2D and 3D Design, Painting I and II, Ceramics, and digital graphics courses such as Digital Imaging, Illustration, Electronic Publishing, Production and Presentation Graphics, Animation, Multimedia Applications, and Theory and Practice of Graphics Design); providing regular assessment data from taught courses; collaborating with Vocal Music, Instrumental Music, and the Theatre Departments on various initiatives and recruiting events; recruiting for scholarships within Visual Arts and Design to further grow the program with both majors and nonmajors; coordinating and launching two student art shows per academic year; and other similar duties necessary to maintain and support visual art, including budget management.

    Position requires flexible hours, reflecting day, evening and weekend opportunities.


    Qualifications

    Masters Degree in Visual Art with an emphasis in studio arts or graphic design or a masters degree in a related field with 18 graduate credits in the concentration.

    The applicants degree must be from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

    Preferred qualifications include two or more years of community college teaching experience, high school teaching experience, experience working with a diverse student body, and experience with assessment.


    Working Conditions/Physical Requirements

    The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of an Associate Professor of Visual Art and Design.

    • Position generally requires light work with occasional lifting of up to (30) pounds or more, carrying supplies, equipment.
    • This position requires the ability to sit or stand or walk for extended and various periods of time.
    • The ability to effectively learn new computer programs and applications as necessary; the ability to effectively troubleshoot changing computer software issues.
    • The ability to communicate clearly with small or large groups of people, with an excellent comprehension of the English language, is essential.
    • Work is generally performed in an indoor setting, in an office or a classroom as directed, using commonly used technology and resources to facilitate instruction.
    • Provide own transportation to and from campus, and appropriate licensing to operate college vehicles on recruiting trips.

    Position Information
    Associate Professor of Visual Art and Designis full time, 9-month tenure-track faculty position with benefits. Salary is commensurate with education and experience. The instructor reports to the VP for Academic Affairs. Start date is mid-August 2023.


    The Associate Professor of Visual Art and Design will be under the supervision of the Vice President of Academic Affairs as part of the Arts and Letters Division at Independence Community College.

    This position requires teaching, coordinating, and recruiting for art and design classes and will also help to fulfill the mission objectives and strategies of the College.


    Primary Responsibilities

    • Teaching areas include, but are not limited to: Art Appreciation, Ceramics I and II, Commercial Art, 2D Design, 3D Design, Drawing I-III, Painting I and II, Color Theory, Digital Photo I and II, Illustration, Introduction to New Media, Portfolio Development, and digital graphics courses such as Digital Imaging, Illustration, Electronic Publishing, Production and Presentation Graphics, Animation, Multimedia Applications, and Theory and Practice of Graphics Design, and other courses based on credentials. Not all of these courses are offered every year.

    Exhibition responsibilities include:
    student shows in the Fine Arts Building at least twice a year.

    • Recruit students for the Visual Art program, maintaining the studio space and associated supplies and equipment.
    • Availability during posted office hours for student advisement and academic assistance. Encouraging student retention, continuity, progress in coursework and program, and student success.
    • Responsible for working with other faculty on student learning and program outcome monitoring of courses and program(s).
    • Work with other instructors and college personnel to promote ICC and the curricula offerings.
    • Fiscally responsible for assisting in budget development, budget implementation, and control necessary to deliver instructional programs in an efficient and effective manner to provide access and quality learning experiences.
    • Assist in development of new programming, including funds development, recruitment, curriculum development and revision.
    • Maintain and enhance teaching excellence through ongoing professional development by participation through in-service training, workshops, seminars, travel, and publication.
    • Provide input in the colleges organizational shared governance structure through involvement in committees, councils and supportive activities related to the development and enhancement of the college mission and strategies.
    • Provide a positive learning environment committed to ICC student success by being receptive to various learning modalities (e.g. on-line, video, accelerated, and hybrid) found in the comprehensive community college setting.
    • Provide information and assist with external reporting for accreditation, governmental, and state agencies. Complete or provide requested input for reports for external agencies as required.
    • Work with the instructional team to provide outcomes assessment, follow-up, and improvement(s).

    General Responsibilities

    • Complete reports and communications in a timely manner for internal and external agencies.
    • Maintain availability based on the needs of the Fine Arts Department.
    • Ensure the security of all ICC property under the supervision of this role.
    • Illustrate clarity of thought and expression in oral and written communications.
    • Exemplify the ability to work with a diverse student population.
    • Communicate effectively with sensitivity to student learning styles and developmental needs.
    • Validate responsible work habits through collaborative and collegial social interactions.
    • Adhere to general rules of safety, procedures, and ethical job standards.
    • Present expertise in content area and keep abreast of advancements in the domain of visual art and design.

    Qualifications

    • Masters Degree in Visual Art with an emphasis in studio art or graphic design or a masters degree in a related field with 18 graduate credits in the concentration.
    • Computer skills related to graphic design desirable.
    • An educational philosophy in alignment with a small, rural comprehensive community college.
