    GIS Technician

    Tacoma, WA

    Hybrid 3 days a week onsite

    About

    Our client is looking for a GIS Technician to work in an environment where their GIS skills can be applied, receive hands-on experience, and work side-by-side with experienced professionals in their GIS section. This position will provide technical support for a variety of GIS projects, assisting in data acquisition, conversion, and creation. Work will include analysis, reporting, tracking, and resolution of data quality issues and enhancement of the water network to better serve the business and operational needs of theirs.

    Work may be performed across multiple platforms and technologies, including Esri, SAP, and AutoCAD. Work may include analyzing, procuring, implementing, supporting and maintaining various applications and/or systems; assist users and information technology staff in meeting technological needs; coordinate and collaborate with various departments, officials, vendors and consultants. This classification series does not include information-technology related work to accomplish tasks on proprietary systems or applications behind departmental firewalls or within departmental private networks such as Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), the Waste Water Distributive Control, or Smart Grid systems.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

    EXAMPLES OF DUTIES (The work described below is not intended to be all inclusive but representative of the level of duties/responsibilities carried out by this job classification):

    • Troubleshoot computer hardware, software and system difficulties; propose solutions, track and assure resolution through appropriate follow-up methods.
    • Perform maintenance and systems changes that improve efficiencies, performance and reliability.
    • Perform data entry and quality control (QA/QC) tasks, ensuring accuracy and completeness of geographic data in system.
    • Provide solutions and resolve less complex systems issues and problems.
    • Install, configure, maintain and troubleshoot problems, isolate solutions to network, applications, operating systems, file servers, network hardware and software; system administration of distributed enterprise management tools; monitor systems disks; prepare and maintain documentation.
    • Participate in evaluations and testing of system upgrades and quality control procedure development related to area of work.
    • Prepare and adhere to project plans and timelines, estimate resource requirements, conduct feasibility studies, communicate status to project manager/supervisor. May provide benchmarking information and metrics.
    • Keep current on a diversity of programming software solutions, develop schema for information storage of user's applications, and produce consistent code, conforming to accepted good practice and department policy and standards..
    • (GIS Analyst) Prepare, design and produce a variety of maps, reports and other graphic representations displaying layers and attribute data from the database using cartographic techniques to represent spatial data; develop and maintain data layers, using GIS tools, CAD tools and databases; enter attribute data pertaining to specific features into databases; incorporate maps, charts, spreadsheet data and text into reports.

    KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:

    • Understand concepts of information technology including computers, peripherals, operating systems and applications.
    • Experience using Esri's suite of GIS products, such as ArcGIS Desktop and ArcGIS Pro
    • Knowledge of principles and concepts of total quality process improvements and problem solving methods.
    • Knowledge of computer technology principles, their application, and troubleshooting techniques.
    • Knowledge of specialized technologies, such as applications, tools, systems, and/or databases.
    • Knowledge of system security systems, backup, disaster recovery and related processes.
    • Knowledge of data and system security, and other similar technical processes.
    • Knowledge in detecting errors in logs.
    • Excellent communication skills.
    • Ability to follow, explore and evaluate technical directions Understand and follow oral and written directions.
    • Work confidentially and with discretion.
    • Meet project schedules and timelines.
    • Troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
