    About the Role Our robotic platform, API, and the apps built on top of them empower scientists to discover, build, and run their own automated experiments. The engineering team is constantly building, iterating on, and shipping these powerful and user-friendly products.

    As a Software Engineering Intern, you will spend your summer working on a software project tailored to your skills and the needs of the company. You'll work under close supervision and mentorship from a senior software engineer, helping you build and deliver a project to production for customers to use. You'll be working as a software engineer, implementing a part of a shipping project from start to finish in a primarily Python and Typescript+React environment, with a little bit of C++. You do not need to have prior experience with all of these technologies, but you should have used at least some of them before, and should be excited to grow your skills in these technologies.

    You will get to work on-site amongst colleagues at Opentrons' headquarters in Long Island City (Court Square). This will be a full-time paid summer internship lasting ~3 months, though precise duration and end-date are subject to the discretion of the business.

    What You Will Do
    • Read, clarify, and understand software requirements
    • Read and learn existing code
    • Plan how to write code to accomplish the requirements in a clear, maintainable and scalable way
    • Collaborate with software engineers, designers, and product managers to make sure your code meets acceptance criteria
    • Write and debug code to adapt the existing system to requirements
    • Work with QA to get the code shipped
    What You Will Learn
    • Software engineering fundamentals; delivering software in an industry environment
    • Understand the experience of a junior software developer
    • Learn the structure of real-world robotics control software
    • Gain experience with professional software development while collaborating with cross-functional teams
    Who We Are Looking For Education:
    • Student on track for Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or other relevant field (BS in Engineering, Computer Engineering, etc.)
    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
    • Desire to work on software for biology and automation
    • Experience with at least one of Python, Typescript, React
    • Ability to learn quickly
    Bonus Qualifications:
    • Biology and/or lab experience
    • Familiarity with Github, Atlassian suite (Jira, Confluence), and Figma
    • Experience with C++

    Compensation:     The pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between $18 and $25 per hour; however base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and years of experience. We typically target mid-range for well-qualified candidates. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, such as paid sick time, dependent on the position offered. Details will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment.
