    Performs preventive inspection, diagnosis, repair, and maintenance of a wide variety of City of Bryan fleet vehicles and equipment.

    Essential Job Functions


    • Performs skilled mechanical repair and overhaul work on various types of City fleet equipment such as automobiles, trucks (both light and heavy duty), gasoline and diesel engines, fire apparatus including pumper engines and aerial devices, heavy equipment such as backhoes, front loaders, graders, street sweepers, mowers and small equipment, and other types of municipal power-driven equipment in accordance with standard trade practices.
    • Repairs, rebuilds, or replaces various types of hydraulic equipment such as pumps, hoses, cylinders, jacks, and other related parts and various types of transmissions, including automatic, manual, and hydrostatic drive systems and their related components.
    • Performs skilled diagnostic and repair procedures on standard and electronic ignition systems, along with computerized fuel injection, diesel fuel systems, and total vehicle electrical systems.
    • Performs preventative maintenance on gasoline and diesel power equipment including changing oil, lubricating the chassis, and checking and replenishing other fluids as needed.
    • Repairs or replaces as needed: lights, batteries, alternators, radiators, transmissions, engines, brakes and related parts, wheels, tires, chassis parts, and mounted vehicle components (both interior and exterior). Installs and repairs safety equipment, light bars, spots lights, emergency beacons, communication systems, and related vehicle wiring.
    • Inspects City vehicles and assures compliance with all local, state, and federal codes and regulations.
    • Utilizes a wide variety of hand tools and other related shop tools and equipment.
    • Stores, handles, applies, and disposes of hazardous materials as required.
    • Assists with maintaining safe, clean, and orderly conditions in the workplace.
    • Performs related duties as required.
    • Responds regularly and promptly to work.
    Minimum Qualifications


    • High School Diploma or GED, preferably supplemented with additional vocational training in automotive repair.
    • Requires at least three (3) years of work experience involving the maintenance and repair of automotive and other mechanical equipment.
    Equivalent combinations of education, experience, certification, and training may be considered.

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities


    Knowledge of:

    • Methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the repair of vehicles, specialty vehicles, and heavy equipment.
    • Gasoline and diesel engines, power trains, and hydraulic, pneumatic, mechanical. and electrical systems.
    • Engines, air conditioning systems, transmissions, hydraulics, tires, and related components.
    • Safety rules, regulations, and occupational hazards in repair shop environments.

    Ability to:

    • Follow instructions, safety practices, and standard operating procedures in performing assigned tasks.
    • Demonstrate the initiative to learn individual job tasks and continue to broaden knowledge levels by willingly accepting new responsibilities and attending training to advance skills.
    • Work independently and/or with limited direction, as well as cooperatively in a team environment, while consistently demonstrating collaborative, respectful, and productive work habits.
    • Operate hand and power tools and specialized automotive maintenance/repair equipment skillfully and safely.
    • Understand and follow work orders, repair manuals, schematics, and other electronic verbal or written instructions.
    • Perform a variety of duties involved in diagnosing, troubleshooting, and repairing vehicles, equipment, and their various system components.
    • Maintain a variety of shop and repair records.
    • Tactfully respond to requests and inquiries from the general public.
    • Prioritize multiple tasks, projects, and demands.
    • Load and unload supplies and lift/move heavy objects.
    • Remain constantly alert and aware of any workplace hazards and follow the safety practices and principles in reporting and preventing accidents.
    • Abide by City and departmental administrative directives, policies, procedures, rules, and regulations.
    • Demonstrate satisfactory work performance and regular, reliable, and punctual attendance.
    • Provide management with sound, positive advice, and information concerning the area of responsibility.
    • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work and communicate effectively with the public and other required entities.
    Licenses, Certifications & Special Requirements


    • Texas Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with a good driving record as measured by the City's evaluation system or the ability to obtain the license within the timeframe set by the department.
    • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification is preferred, but not required. Must be able to obtain ASE certification in at least 2 skill areas within 6 months of hire. ASE Master Certification is a plus.
    • Must possess a current State of Texas Inspection License or the ability to obtain within the timeframe set by the department.
    • Must be able to furnish your own personal toolbox with a complete set of tools by point of hire and maintain during the course of employment.
    Physical Demands


    Physical demands include but are not limited to: sitting, talking, hearing, seeing, standing, walking, driving, stooping, kneeling, reaching, pushing, pulling, twisting, bending, crawling, climbing, and using hands and fingers to operate tools and equipment and to lift or move objects up to 70 pounds.

    Working Conditions

    Work is performed primarily in an automotive shop environment.

    There is exposure to moving mechanical parts, noise, vibration, electrical/mechanical hazards, inclement weather, temperature extremes, slippery or uneven surfaces, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, noxious odors, gases, and hazardous materials.

    Equipment


    Work shall be performed with tools, appliances and equipment approved by those agencies and bodies that have control, authority, or approval of the design working ranges or limitations of those items; the employee has the responsibility to conform to those ranges and limitations.


    Equipment may include but is not limited to: welders, torches, hand tools, 2-10 ton hoists, grinders, jacks, presses, testers, scopes, computers/laptops, scanners and various other shop tools.
