    Description

    Summary:

    Under the general supervision of the HCH Nurse Manager Senior
    Milieu Therapist and Charge RN is responsible for the care and safety of
    assigned children. As a member of the multidisciplinary treatment team assumes
    primary milieu therapist role. Is responsible for the input into the
    formulation of a therapeutic milieu treatment plan and the implementation
    observation and documentation of this program under the direction of the
    multidisciplinary team. Provides services to medically compromised and
    emotionally disturbed children / adolescents.

    Responsibilities:

    PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND
    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Frontline clinical position for either / both the child
    (ages 6-12 years old) or teen ages 13-18 with some children functioning at the
    range of 4-5years old.

    Manages the structure of the day for significantly medically
    and emotionally unstable children.

    Has the ability to lead a group of 6-10 pediatric patients
    who are struggling with severe medical and psychosocial issues through the
    structured components of their day.

    Involved with the implementation of behavior plans for the
    behavioral age groups.

    Participates in support/supervision related to meal plans.

    Creates participates demonstrates analytical skills and an
    understanding of psychiatric / medical illnesses and organizes therapeutic and
    recreational activities to meet the psychosocial and developmental needs for
    children ranging from 6-18 years of age.

    Creates developmentally appropriate therapeutic recreational
    activities for varying ages with understanding of relations issues for the
    school age population.

    Participates in maintaining a safe and therapeutic
    environment. Participates in operation of the milieu care plan for assigned
    patients according to established department and unit-based procedure / policy.

    Demonstrates appropriate critical incident follow-up skills
    by timely verbal reporting to charge RN/ Senior MT and documentation in the
    medical record.

    Intervenes in disruptive milieu or destructive to self /
    other patient situations providing timely therapeutic intervention(s).

    Completes initial milieu assessment within a 24-hour period.
    Collaborates with other members of the multidisciplinary team.

    Supports and contributes to the development of milieu
    therapy care plans / behavioral management.

    Assists patient searches as appropriate and escorts patients
    to other departments in the hospital.

    Demonstrates ability to set consistent and supportive
    therapeutic limits within guidelines of hospital unit department and
    standards.

    Institutes behavioral programs specific to the needs of the
    patient in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team.

    Handles crisis situations in a safe effective manner.

    Has the ability to multitask during a highly structured
    program day.

    Maintains and documents level of patient observation as
    ordered by the

    Multidisciplinary Team/Nurse Manager/Senior MT.

    Actively participates in the treatment planning process by
    attending multidisciplinary team rounds 4 days a week.

    Communicates individual patient milieu treatment plans in an
    ongoing manner to the members on the multidisciplinary treatment team throughout
    the day in order to modify individual treatment plans as clinically necessary.

    Actively participates in treatment team shift report and
    clinical supervision.

    Demonstrates interpersonal and communication skills to
    effectively interact with patient/families as well as other members of the
    healthcare team.

    Consistently models to patient/ families appropriate and
    therapeutic interpersonal staff/patient interactions.

    Initiates formal/informal supervision with the Senior Milieu
    Therapist and Nurse

    Manager and incorporates feedback for improvement/ changes
    in job performance.

    Adheres to hospital departmental and unit policies and
    procedures.

    Consistently follows all hospital and
    departmental policies and procedures.

    Consistently follows all unit-based policies
    and procedures.



    Is aware of departmental QA indicators and responsibilities related to such.

    Other information:
    BASIC KNOWLEDGE:

    Associate Degree required. Baccalaureate Degree in
    a Human Service or related field preferred. Other education and
    experience considered and may be substituted for educational requirements at
    the discretion of the Hiring Manager. Must demonstrate aptitude and willingness
    to learn role related skills.

    Current CPR certification

    Current RIH Crisis Management certification or current
    enrollment

    Demonstrates a theoretical understanding of children within
    families.

    Must have sound understanding of the social and
    developmental issues that are encountered in the medically ill child and teen
    populations. Understanding of body image self-esteem and identity development
    issues particular to teenagers

    Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care
    to patients with consideration of aging process human development stages and
    cultural patterns in each step of the care process

    EXPERIENCE:

    One year of recent (within 3 years) experience in a
    pediatric environment ages 6-18

    Experience with medically compromised and/or emotionally
    impaired children

    WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL
    REOUIREMENTS:

    General Hospital environment with occasional stressful
    conditions associated with children with emotional and behavioral disorders.

    INDEPENDENT ACTION:

    Responds to individual patient-care situations demonstrating
    knowledge and skills acquired through education certification and work
    experience.

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

    None
