    GENERAL JOB SUMMARY:
    This is a part-time position (up to hrs./week) located on the Emmetsburg Campus from August th – May th. Primary responsibility is to provide personal, academic, career, and transfer counseling services to students at the College. The successful candidate may start immediately upon hire or in the fall depending on the candidate's schedule.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES (% OF THE TIME):

  • Meet with students on an appointment schedule or on a walk-in basis as needed to effectively meet staff and student needs.Counsel students on academic and career goals, choices and programs and assist them in making appropriate decisions.Counsel students on personal matters and assist as appropriate to resolve problems or refer the student for professional support, alcoholism counseling, mental health, eating disorders, food insecurity, etc.Provide early identification of and intervention with potentially at-risk students.Follow-up with students identified of needing extra support.Provide faculty-staff training/support to increase student retention and program completion.Assist students in deciding on transfer institutions and in determining transfer requirements.

  • Conduct assessments that enable students to become self-aware and increase their achievement at the college level.Provide interventions for at-risk students.Establish and maintain confidential records of students.Continually market services to students and staff to enhance awareness of services available.Establish and maintain contact with appropriate agency personnel and Iowa Lakes Community College faculty and staff.

  • Complete annual reports, as required, by the College to comply with state and federal regulations.Participate in statewide counseling organizations.Serve on selected and volunteer committees.Participate in new student orientation, student housing education program, and activities related to substance abuse prevention, mental health concerns, eating disorders, etc.Attend meetings and conferences as required by supervisor.Other duties as assigned.
  • KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Ability to access, input, and retrieve information from a computer for word processing, data base information, and the mainframe.
  • Represent the College and school district in a positive manner to employees, students, visitors, and the general public.
  • Must be enthusiastic and energetic in performance of assigned duties and responsibilities.
  • Ability to express oneself clearly and effectively in oral and written documentation.
  • Ability to read and understand written and oral instruction or communication.
  • Ability to efficiently perform tasks in an environment of frequent interruptions.
  • Ability to assume responsibility, deal effectively with problems and exercise good judgment when making decisions.
  • Ability to establish rapport with students and staff and gain their confidence.
  • SPECIAL DEMANDS:

    Sedentary to light work. Position involves sitting most of the time, exerting up to pounds of force occasionally (-%). Stooping, kneeling, crouching, pushing, pulling, carrying, and repetitive motion occasionally (-%). Walking, lifting, and grasping frequently (-%). Talking, hearing, and viewing various types of close visual work constantly (-%). Required to required to travel utilizing personal vehicle. Must have valid driver's license, good driving record and provide proof of insurance.

    Employment with Iowa Lakes Community College is dependent upon successful passage of a criminal background check. Must be legally eligible to work in the United States without employer sponsorship.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    Master's Degree in Counseling required. Three years' experience in an educational or social work setting required.
