    General Description:

    The Senior Pipe Line Inspector is responsible for the work execution of construction projects and integrity management programs including field inspections and inspection crew coordination. The position requires, visual and NDT inspections, daily planning and direction of inspection crews, coordination of crew activities with the client and maintenance crews, interaction with engineering representatives and review and completion of final inspection and assessment reports.

  • Keep daily records of project progress and inspection notes.
  • Observe and verify safe practices are being followed.
  • Communicate constructability issues to Hess construction supervisors.
  • Communicate quality concerns to inspection lead.
  • Communicate NDE needs to Inspection Lead.
  • Review/retrieve material MTR's.
  • Inspect ROW clearing and grading.
  • Inspect Hydrovac and foreign line exposure.
  • Inspect ROW water removal and drainage.
  • Inspect environmental BMP installation.
  • Inspect pipeline stringing (Steel, Poly, Flexsteel).
  • Inspect pipe bending process (Steel Pipe).
  • Inspect post weld coating application (Steel Pipe).
  • Observe line gauging.
  • Inspect fusing of poly pipe.
  • Inspect coatings.
  • Verify coating has been applied properly as defined in the spec.
  • Verify crew jeeped coated pipe prior to installation.
  • Inspect Fabrication, such as: travel between ROW and contractor fab shops to document fabrication progress, inspect fabrication material, verify material heat numbers, assign weld tracking numbers to fabrications and pipe, inspect welding process of line pipe and fabrications, draw and populate weld mapping on drawings, draw and populate heat trace numbers for material, update and maintain weld tracking log, and verify PWHT has been performed and documented.
  • Inspect bolt up, such as: verify torquing of fasteners, verify location and installation of gaskets and iso kits, verify proper bolt up material specification,
  • Inspect the lowering in of pipe, such as: verify pipe is free from contact with debris, verify pipe wasn't strained or kinked while installed, verify ditch is free of water, verify pipe is supported properly in ditch.
  • Observe backfill process, such as: verify rock shield is used as required, verify pipe is padded properly before backfill, verify cathodic material is installed, and verify backfill is completed properly.
  • Pressure testing duties, such as: communicate with inspection lead expected times of pressure tests, verify recording gauges are within calibration, verify testing procedure is followed (before, during and after), submit pressure test results for approval to the inspection lead, and observe pipe dewatering and pigging.
  • Update and complete project asset registry.
  • Apply asset tags to valves.
  • Update projects redline drawings, such as: ISO drawing redlines, and PNID redlines.
  • Attend project walk downs.
  • Develop Punchlist of Items to be completed.

  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Skilled with computer software including MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Access) and PDF Editor.
  • Knowledge of industrial safety cultures and safety minded.
  • Ability to read blueprints, engineers' drawings, and architectural renderings of facility, plant, and equipment.
  • Ability to work under pressure and coordinate numerous activities and groups of people who need to cooperate to achieve maximum efficiency.
  • Skilled in written, verbal, and interpersonal communication which includes good listening, and the ability to provide clear direction and effective feedback.
  • Knowledge of tools used in scope of work.
  • Ability to work with facility owners, operators, engineers, and asset reliability and maintenance leaders to build working relationships that lead to successful contract fulfillment and continuation.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently.
  • Ability to read and decipher client issued project drawings (Pipeline Route Alignment, Isometric and P&IDs).
  • Ability to digitally produce project technical drawing redlines.
  • Knowledge of underground pipeline construction.
  • Knowledge of Flexsteel and spooled pipe installation.
  • Knowledge of HDPE pipe installation.
  • Knowledge of steel pipe fabrication and installation.
  • Knowledge of pneumatic and hydrostatic pressure testing.
  • Ability to digitally produce weld mapped and material traced technical drawings.
  • Ability to understand and review material test reports (MTR).
  • Ability to digitally manage jobsite reporting and data collection.
  • Ability to administer final project quality review site visits.
  • Ability to communicate quality concerns to the QC Manager.
  • Ability to organize project related field documents.
  • Work Environment:

    This is a full-time position assigned to North Dakota with some work in neighboring states as needed. All assigned positions are on-call 24 hours/day while on shift or assigned temporarily to another project. Flexibility regarding hours of work is required as needed to meet demands of the job. Position may be reassigned at any time to meet operational objectives.

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works at the project site. The employee may be exposed to moving mechanical parts; high precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; outside weather conditions and risk of electrical shock. The noise in these work environments is usually moderate to very loud. Position may be working with potentially hazardous materials and wastes.

    Physical Requirements:

    The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. A pre-hire post offer Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE) will be conducted to determine an employee's ability to perform to the job standard.   • MOBILITY: Must be able to access all controls and all parts of machinery for service. Must be able to push/pull 50 pounds for 20 feet.
  • HEARING: Must be able to hear audible safety alarms.
  • VISUAL ACUITY: Must be adequate to perform above listed tasks in a safe manner and take hand signals from ground man or flag man.
  • LIFTING: Must be able to routinely lift up to 50 pounds from floor to waist, 30 pounds from wait level to shoulder height and carry 50 pounds for 20 feet.
  • RANGE OF MOTION: An objective range of motion measurement will be conducted and recorded using a five position and rapid exchange grip strength test during the pre-hire/post offer FCE.

  • High School Diploma or GED is required.
  • Must possess either CWI- 5+ years' experience in the pipeline construction industry or NACE & API years in the pipeline construction industry.
