    Reason position exists

    The function of the nurse is to maintain a health care program at the assigned facility that will assist in the provision of the appropriate healthcare and health screening for the residents. The nurse will also be directly responsible for the Department of Health related in-service education for the residents and staff members, and for the planning, organizing and implementation of this program.

    Duties and Responsibilities include the following:

    1. Resident Health Care - Nurse responsibilities

    a. Duties
    • Conduct a nursing assessment with new residents per 2960 standards.
    • Assist needs of children and provide treatment as indicated.
    • Instruct staff in care of ill children.
    • Assist in scheduling appointments as needed for children.
    • Monitor administration of medication.
    • Document all medical information in Nurse's log.
    1. New Resident Intake
    2. Nursing assessment to be completed within established timeline.
    3. Complete medical/initial service plan report and place in Nurse's log.
    4. Verify medication information and health service providers.
    5. Resident's Health Education
    • Hygiene - assess needs, instruct one- to one when necessary.
    • Human Sexuality- address sexuality issues from a health perspective.
    • Medications- Explain medication effects (desired) and side effects (undesired) to residents on medications.
    3. Nurse's Responsibility to staff members
    • Communicate with staff members the health concerns of residents.
    • Provide training to group home staff on medication administration and health screening of residents.
    • Provide information to group home staff, as needed, to ensure continuity of health care for residents
    • Be available for consult via phone.
    • Medications- Explain medication effects (desired) and side effects (undesired) to staff
    • Provide training to staff on universal precautions and blood pathogens
    1. Administrative duties
    • Consult with Program Manager about any medical problems or questionable medical practices that arise.
    • Assist in updating medical policies and procedures as needed and indicated by program changes or licensing requirements.
    • Write medical incident reports when medical infractions are discovered and submit to the Program Manager.
    • Assist in the acquisition of medical supplies.

    Qualifications:
    • The nurse must be a graduate of a state accredited School of Nursing and hold a current registration with Minnesota Board of Nursing.
    • Nurses are independent contractors and must maintain their own medical malpractice and liability insurance coverage, with appropriate financial limits and protections.
    • Must meet the Rule 2960 standard.
