    POSITION PURPOSE:


    Under limited supervision, performs a variety of professional work to assist in the coordination of activities of the Student Support Services Department.

    Work involves function as a consultant to schools and ensuring the implementation of required policies and procedures affecting students physical and mental wellness.

    Employee is responsible for reviewing, managing, maintaining, and communicating with the school administration regarding school health program and practice issues, state-mandated compliance issues, requirements, etc.

    Work is guided by and must be in compliance with federal guidelines, as well as, state statutes and regulations. Employee must exercise considerable independent judgment and initiative in the performance of assignments.


    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Bachelor of Science degree or higher in Nursing (or other Bachelor of Science degree accepted by National Board for Certification of School Nurses (NBCSN).
    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES


    • Thorough knowledge of federal, state, and local policies and procedures regarding School Nursing
    • Considerable knowledge of current trends, publications, research and laws pertaining to HIPPA and FERPA.
    • Ability to maintain complete and accurate confidential records and statistics and to develop meaningful reports from that information
    • Ability to implement appropriate programs for School Nursing
    • Ability to assess the effectiveness of programs and activities
    • Ability to effectively express ideas orally and in writing
    • Ability to make oral presentations before large groups of people
    • Ability to use a computer and current word processing programs, create spreadsheets, and access online tools
    • Ability to navigate online tools such as Powerschool, etc.
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments
    EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE


    • Bachelor of Science degree or higher in Nursing (or other Bachelor of Science degree accepted by National Board for Certification of School Nurses (NBCSN).

    CERTIFICATION AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS

    • Registered Nurse with current Licensure with NC Board of Nursing (NCBON).
    • National Certification as a school nurse (within 3 years of hire date).
    • Current CPR Certification
    • Must possess a valid driver's license issued by the NC Department of Motor Vehicles

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Five (5) years of experience serving as a School Nurse in a public-school setting
    • Spanish Speaking

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Assure that school health policies and procedures adhere to federal, state, and current standards of the Nursing Practice Act, and are correctly implemented throughout the school system.
    • Serve as a health consultant to the school administration.
    • Communicate with the school administration regarding school health program and practice issues, state-mandated compliance issues, requirements, etc.
    • Maintenance of updated and accurate job descriptions for the school nurses.
    • Provide case consultation as needed
    • Attend School Nurse monthly school nurse meetings, zonal meetings and school nurse committee meetings
    • Maintain accurate medical documentation.
    • Establish process by which to identify student health needs.
    • Review and update all standard forms for the school health program.
    • Develop timelines for health screenings.
    • Participate in evaluation of program through collection and review of data.
    • Serve on committees with local medical and health agencies related to health issues as system representative.
    • Represent school nursing division on the Student Support Services Team.
    • Monitor school nurse supply and equipment needs.
    • Coordinate mandated Blood Borne Pathogen Annual Trainings and mandated General & Intensive Diabetes Annual Trainings for school staff.
    • Coordinate the establishment of guidelines, procedures, and training in First Aid/CPR/First Responder Program for school staff.
    • Provide assistance for School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) as requested by the Lead School Nurse.
