    Performs a pivotal and central role in the counseling and assessment of patients and families who experience genetic disorders or birth defects by helping predict risk, understand the diagnosis, probable course, available management strategies, and methods to maximum insurance reimbursement.

    Identifies, researches, and provides specialist-level counsel when designing patient treatment programs to identify additional genetic disease testing. Tracks genetic data and determines best practice within defining operational metrics. Demonstrates knowledge of health care systems, health insurance authorization processes, community resources, and reimbursement for patient care.

    Genetic Counselor

    Education

    Required - Master's degree from an accredited training program in Genetic Counseling

    Work Experience

    Required - None

    Preferred - Post graduate clinical experience as a genetic counselor

    Certifications

    Required - Eligible for Board Certification by the American Board of Genetic Counseling and/or the American Board of Medical Genetics

    Knowledge Skills and Abilities (KSAs)
    Must have computer skills and dexterity required for data entry and retrieval of information.
    Effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present information clearly and professionally.
    Must be proficient with Windows-style applications, various software packages specific to role and keyboard.
    Strong interpersonal skills.

    Job Duties
    Conducts thorough medical history, including detailed family histories.
    Collects and reviews all lab data and medical records of patient to establish patient's current health status.
    Utilizes clinical skills and knowledge in the assessment of health status.

    Gathers and integrates patient data to assist in the development of an individualized plan of care, utilizing appropriate reference material.

    Coordinates handling of patient specimens with appropriate laboratory standards.
    Maintains knowledge of growth and development.

    Adapts behavior to the specific patient population, including but not limited to: respect for privacy, method of introduction to the patient, adapting explanation of services or procedures to be performed, requesting permissions and communication style.

    Performs other related duties as assigned.

    Genetic Counselor-Certified

    Education

    Required - Master's degree from an accredited training program in Genetic Counseling

    Work Experience

    Required - 1 year of experience as a genetic counselor

    Certifications

    Required - Certified Genetic Counselor by the American Board of Genetic Counseling and/or the American Board of Medical Genetics

    Knowledge Skills and Abilities (KSAs)
    Must have computer skills and dexterity required for data entry and retrieval of information.

    Required - 5 years of experience in genetic counseling

    Certifications

    Required - Board certified by the American Board of Genetic Counseling or the American Board of Medical Genetics

    Knowledge Skills and Abilities (KSAs)
    Must have computer skills and dexterity required for data entry and retrieval of information.
    Effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present information clearly and professionally.
    Must be proficient with Windows-style applications, various software packages specific to role and keyboard.
    Strong interpersonal skills.
    Ability to communicate effectively, as GCs are decentralized.
    Ability to successfully work across service lines in a matrix environment.
    Advanced knowledge with genetic testing, industry trends and best practices.

    Job Duties

    Oversees the development and maintenance of a patient data base to track referrals and to document clinic counseling best practice and trends.

    Ensures evidence and practice-based methods and protocols support genetic counseling best practices.
    Provides specialized and functional leadership for the day-to-day operations of the genetic counselor's department.

    Demonstrates a comprehensive understanding of strategies for maximizing insurance reimbursement for GC services, including both commercial and government third-party payors.

    Participate in scholarship activities including lectures, case presentations, and submission of manuscripts when applicable.
    Plans and develops strategies for generating resources and/or revenues for specific clinical projects, programs or trials.
    Participates in cross-discipline education and training opportunities to broaden non-genetics providers understanding of genetic disease, treatment, and management. Collaborates with other departments in multidisciplinary clinics and in the establishment of new multidisciplinary clinics.

    Adapts behavior to the specific patient population, including but not limited to: respect for privacy, method of introduction to the patient, adapting explanation of services or procedures to be performed, requesting permissions and communication style.

    Performs other related duties as assigned.
