    UPMC Shadyside is hiring a full-time Medical Lab Technician or Medical Lab Scientist to support the Automated Testing Lab This role will work a steady evening schedule, with rotating weekends and holidays.

    Applicants will be placed into the appropriate job title and salary based on their individual experience and education. The Medical Lab Scientist's salary starts at $25.74/hour.

    UPMC is Offering a generous sign-on bonus for MLS and MLT new hires Sign-on Bonus Details:

    Medical Lab Technician Sign-On Bonus Details:

    • $7,000 for a 2-year commitment
    • $10,000 for a 3-year commitment

    Medical Lab Scientist Sign-On Bonus Details:

    • $10,000 for a 2-year commitment
    • $15,000 for a 3-year commitment

    Responsibilities:

    • Meets established testing protocols for precision and accuracy in a timely and efficient manner. Recognizes critical, abnormal, and unacceptable test results and follows up according to established protocols.
    • Independently performs Moderately Complex, or Waived tests (qualitative and quantitative). Performs High Complexity testing only with the oversight of a Medical technologist, or with result review by a Supervisor or Manager.
    • Performs and documents Quality Control according to established protocols. Informs supervisory personnel and/or pathologists of any unusual or problematic incidents.
    • Assists with the training and orienting of new employees, students and residents, using established competency and workstation operational guidelines.
    • Monitors and maintains supplies for those functions for which the position is responsible; cost-effectively uses materials and reagents.
    • Processes specimens for analysis. Enters accurate patient demographic information and laboratory test orders into the laboratory information system, while ascertaining adequacy of patient information and sample integrity.
    • Adheres to all established laboratory and hospital policies, procedures, methods, quality assurance, proficiency testing, and personnel policies.
    • Follows all biohazard, chemical, and sharps safety guidelines. Maintains a safe work environment.
    • Maintains instruments following procedural calibrations, quality control, and daily maintenance and troubleshooting when necessary.

    Qualifications:

    Medical Laboratory Scientist:

    • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university AND successful completion of a CAHEA accredited Medical Technology program, OR
    • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university with a major in biological, chemical, physical or clinical laboratory science AND ASCP categorical certification, OR
    • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university with a major in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical laboratory science AND at least two years' experience in a role equivalent to that of a Medical Laboratory technician (MLT) in a clinical laboratory, OR
    • Equivalent education and experience as defined by CLIA '88 and PA Bureau of Laboratories for technologists performing high complexity testing.
    • Prefer 1-year experience in a hospital laboratory. Knowledge of medical terminology and laboratory information systems preferred.

    Medical Lab Technician:

    • Associate Degree in a laboratory science with certification (or eligible new graduate) from an accredited institution as either a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), or as a Clinical Laboratory Assistant (CLA) OR;
    • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited institution with a major in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical laboratory science OR;
    • Equivalent education and experience as defined by CLIA '88 for individuals performing high complexity testing.
    • Completion of an MLT program highly preferred.
    • Familiarity with medical terminology and laboratory information systems preferred.

    Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

    • Medical Laboratory Technician MLT(ASCP) or Clinical Laboratory Assistant (CLA) certification preferred.
