    GENERAL SUMMARY:
    The psychologist diagnoses and treats mental, substance use, developmental and behavioral disorders and disabilities; assesses and establishes a level of care for patients; requests admission as needed; provides consultation; determines disability and decisional capacity; evaluates dangerousness and suicidality; provides supervision; and performs research as defined by the scope of practice of psychology in Michigan

    Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery and Audiology

    The psychologist within Otolaryngology will work in close collaboration with the specialists in neurotology, sleep surgery, audiology, and gender-affirming surgery to support patients.

    This work will include pre-surgical evaluation and clearance, outpatient psychotherapy (e.g., tinnitus, vertigo, adjustment), and program development.

    Activities occur across outpatient, inpatient, and virtual settings


    Responsibilities include:

    • Assess, diagnose, and address emotional, psychological, cognitive and social issues that may affect patient care, quality of life, and surgical or treatment outcomes
    • Psychological testing including emotional functioning, health literacy, and cognitive impairment
    • Medical decision making or capacity evaluations
    • Screen for substance use disorders and facilitate treatment
    • Manage substance use risk, particularly in context of emergent surgical treatment and chronic pain disorders
    • Assess motivation to engage in and adhere to treatment recommendations, barriers to optimal compliance, and stage of change
    • Collaborate with multidisciplinary medical colleagues to provide comprehensive, yet efficient and cost effective, patient care aimed at improving the quality of life of patients and families
    • Attend multidisciplinary surgical meetings for cochlear implant consideration
    • Opportunities for trainee supervision and teaching
    The Henry Ford Health Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery has eight clinics across southeast Michigan. The majority of care is provided at Henry Ford Hospital - a 900-bed tertiary care facility in Detroit.

    The Department also provides services to 3 community hospitals within the Henry Ford Health System across southeast and south-central Michigan.

    The Department has fellowship-trained specialists in the areas of laryngology, neurotology, head and neck cancer, head and neck endocrine, rhinology, pediatric otolaryngology, facial plastic and reconstructive surgery and sleep medicine.

    Additionally, the Department includes Audiology and Oral-Maxillofacial Surgery specialists.

    The Department also supports a very competitive otolaryngology residency program with an outstanding national reputation for clinical, educational, and research programs.

    EDUCATION/


    EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

    PhD or PsyD in Clinical or Health Psychology from an APA or CPA accredited program and at least 1-year post-doc experience.

    Two years of experience as a practicing Psychologist is preferred.

    Skill and experience in providing clinical psychological services to patients with acute or chronic medical illness, mental health, substance use, and/or developmental disorders and systems-based perspective that includes caregivers.

    Possesses comprehensive knowledge of the scientific methods used in psychology; the social, behavioral, developmental, and biological sources of normal and pathological behavior, psychopathology, behavior change, and psychotherapy, particularly in the medical context.

    Knowledge of state and federal laws and legal requirements for practice. Skilled in developing and presenting psychoeducational materials and in making group presentations preferred. Skilled in providing clinical supervision preferred.

    CERTIFICATIONS/


    LICENSURES REQUIRED:

    Must have completed a pre-doctoral internship or post-doctoral fellowship approved by the American Psychological Association or Canadian Psychological Association or must meet the requirements of a Registrant in the National Register or be a Diplomate of the American Board of Professional Psychology.

    Must be in possession of or eligible for a Rule 10 License or independently/fully licensed as a Psychologist in the State of Michigan.
