    Full-Time, 8-HR Days

    This position will be responsible for managing referrals to the Psychosocial Oncology Program at the Stanford Cancer Center and contributing to program development.

    This is a Stanford Health Care job.

    A Brief Overview
    Assesses patient's mental health needs and determines the appropriate referral for patients and families. Collaborates with faculty, staff physicians, psychologists, psychiatry clinic coordinators, insurance coordinators, patient financial services and external individual and agency referral sources. Identifies complex problems that often require ingenious approached to resolve.

    What you will do

    • Determines suitable clinic/provider match based upon patients presenting mental health issues and needs.
    • Provides clinic/provider with comprehensive intake data within 24 hours of intake being completed to ensure a timely response.
    • Makes referrals to external affiliate providers when appropriate.
    • Utilizes knowledge of community resources for patients and families requiring external referrals.
    • Assists in determining the appropriate level of care for patients.
    • Serves as resource to other staff in the area of intake and triage.
    • Assists clinic coordinators in understanding the clinical issues surrounding patient referrals, clinic assignment and treatment indicated and/or requested.
    • Participates in intake/triage orientation of new staff.
    • Responds to patient and non-patient emergencies according to SHC policies and procedures.
    • Accesses patient information from hospital and clinic databases to ensure information is appropriately verified and accurate system wide.
    • Utilizes mental health benefits database and ensures that information is complete, comprehensive, accurate and updated for quality control.
    • Provides detailed clinical, social, demographic and financial information on each intake to ensure that adequate data is related to the provider.
    • Accurately assigns CPT and ICD-9 codes with authorizations when indicated.
    • Accurately abstracts physician documentation.
    • Correctly identifies billing and documentation issues which need to be attended to by physicians and managers and report them in a timely manner.
    • Provides effective orientation and ongoing training for physicians in billing procedures.
    • Answers inquiries from physicians, patients, third party payors and PFS regarding benefits, authorizations and treatment being offered and documents all interactions.
    • Conducts adequate research before completing intake and documents accordingly.
    • Maintains daily log and tracks initial calls, inquiries and non-referrals.
    • Provides required authorization documentation to PFS as requested for problem cases.
    • Utilizes a variety of reports and sources to monitor and track intakes and appointment scheduling.
    • Tracks intakes requiring urgent attention and communicates difficulties in accessing services to manager.


    Education Qualifications

    • B.A./B.S. degree in Psychology, Social Work or related field is minimum required
    • Master's degree preferred


    Experience Qualifications

    • Experience in mental health setting strongly preferred


    Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    • Maintains current knowledge of EPIC and contract information
    • Familiarity with the complexities of managed care, mental health services and benefit structure is essential
    • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as with a team
    • Demonstrated ability to tolerate a high volume environment and crisis situations and exercise sound judgement
    • Demonstrated assessment skills
    • Demonstrated communication skills, both verbal and written
    • Ability to set priorities
    • Basic computer proficiency

    Base Pay Scale: Generally starting at $ $38.44 per hour

    The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training. This pay scale is not a promise of a particular wage.
