    Summary


    Performs a variety of electrical construction, installation, repair, service, alteration, and maintenance tasks on electrical distribution systems, connections, and equipment.

    Participates in, and is capable of performing related work at this level of skill by assisting or participating with other trades in their specialty.

    The Electrician is a multi-skilled maintenance specialist, requiring journey level experience, competency, and physical abilities in connection with commercial electrical systems and generalist skills in additional related trades areas.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities


    • Installs, maintains, troubleshoots and repairs electrical distribution systems and fixtures, transmission lines, conduit and duct systems, lighting and power circuits, and generators, switchboards, and transformers, including those categorized as industrial/commercial.
    • Installs, adjusts, repairs or replaces electric lights, motors, heaters, and other electrical apparatus. Installs raceways and panels, holders, boxes, and supports.
    • Performs a variety of diagnostic and analytical tests, including those involving programmable logic controls, infra-red, and ultrasonic.
    • Responds to failures, disasters, and emergencies involving the electrical system, apparatus, and equipment.
    • Performs preventative maintenance on high voltage switch gear. Performs maintenance and urgent repairs to electric mobility vehicles.
    • Responds to maintenance calls for electric doors, elevators, and other assisted devices.
    • Operates a variety of equipment and tools for electrical work, including meters, diagnostic devices, and electrical line apparatus.
    • Participates in inspections, diagnoses, servicing, and repairs to refrigeration and air distribution systems. Adjusts, repairs, or replaces motors, and other electrical apparatus. Services and may install direct digital control systems.
    • Participates in projects such as wiring telecommunications lines between and within structures.
    • Accesses and retrieves work orders using the automated work order system. May enter time and materials information associated with work performed on orders.
    • Participates with or assists other skilled maintenance specialists in at least the following areas such as plumbing, heating and air conditioning, carpentry, locksmith, and painting, as needed, to assure safety, balance workload, and complete projects on a timely-basis.
    • Maintains required records and makes reports. Prepares reports on work completed and materials used. Ensures that secondary containers for cleaning and other products are properly labeled. Ensures that Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for assigned area(s) are up to date.
    • Operates and may perform minor maintenance of equipment including light tractors, skip loaders, forklifts and other labor saving devices.
    • Recommends standards and specifications for equipment, materials, and workmanship for work performed by staff and outside contractors.
    • May lead or assist other maintenance staff and temporary workers assisting with maintenance.
    • Maintains currency of knowledge and skills related to the duties and responsibilities.
    • Performs other related duties as assigned.
    Education and Experience


    The position requires a High School diploma or equivalent plus specialized training and 4 years of experience as a journey commercial electrician and generalist experience in related trades such as carpentry, plumbing, painting, locksmith, or mechanical.

    Preferred Qualifications


    • 5 years working as a journeyman electrician with credentials.
    • Ability to perform preventive maintenance routines and emergency repair protocols.
    • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.
    • Experience with Delta or other DDC controls and automation systems.
    • Able to train others and develop professional relationships.
    Knowledge and Skills


    The position requires in-depth working knowledge of the principles, practices, methods, techniques, materials, tools, equipment, layouts and set-ups used in electrical installation, troubleshooting, and maintenance Requires a working knowledge of the uses and purposes of hand and power tools and equipment used in electrical work, construction, and general maintenance.

    Requires knowledge of the assembly and operation of labor saving devices such as scaffolding and personnel and material handling equipment.

    Requires basic knowledge of the operating characteristics and maintenance procedures for fire prevention systems, elevators, and swimming pools. Requires knowledge of safe work practices and the safety orders of the California OSHA related to area of specialty. Requires sufficient math skills to make measurements and estimate costs.     Abilities


    Requires the ability to perform journeyman commercial electrical work skillfully and in a timely manner and participate/assist in the work of other trades.

    Requires the ability to promptly respond to District emergencies.

    Requires the ability to operate vehicles and labor saving devices such as chain hoists and electric high-lift equipment, maintenance equipment, and hand and power tools used to perform construction, carpentry, electrical and mechanical services.

    Requires the ability to perform welding and glazing. Requires the ability to read and interpret drawings, sketches, blueprints, schematics, and building and fire codes. Requires the ability to maintain records and activity logs. Requires the ability to estimate materials and labor for assignments. Requires the ability to observe safe work practices and handle hazardous materials according to accepted procedures. Requires the ability to complete projects on a timely basis and support special events.

    Requires the ability to complete training within a reasonable time in handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials, asbestos awareness, OSHA standards, and blood borne pathogens.

    Requires the ability to maintain productive and cooperative working relationships with others.

    Physical Abilities


    Requires the ability to stand for extended periods of time, walk up to 400 yards, and manipulate (lift, carry, move) light to heavy weights of up to 75 pounds on a regular basis.

    Requires the ability to push, pull, and guide materials over 75 pounds. Requires the ability to climb (e.g. ladders), stoop, kneel, and crouch on a regular basis.

    Requires sufficient hand-eye coordination, hand and finger dexterity including ability to grasp, and visual acuity to operate specialized equipment and read technical (including blueprints) and safety information.

    Requires auditory ability to hear machinery sounds and alarms. Requires near and far visual acuity to read printed materials, moving objects, and observe work-in-progress. Requires speaking ability to carry on ordinary conversations. Requires the ability to work in extreme temperature conditions.

    Licenses and Certificates

    Requires a valid Driver's License.

    Working Conditions


    Work is performed indoors and outdoors in extreme weather conditions where significant safety considerations exist from risk of electrical shock full-body physical labor and handling of medium-to-heavy weight materials.

    Salary/Fringe Benefits

    Grade 40 on District Classified Salary Schedule ($6, $7,733.68 /month).

    Health and welfare benefits include District contribution for medical/dental/vision benefits and employee life insurance ($50,000). (Cash in lieu option available on medical insurance.)

    Participation in the Public Employee's Retirement System that is also integrated with Social Security.

    Conditions of Employment

    This is a full-time, 12-calendar month classified position.

    Hours of employment are:
    Monday thru Friday 7:00 am to 3:30 pm

    Initial placement of employees on Classified Salary schedule is at Step 1. After six months of successful probationary employment, employee is placed at Step 2.

    Employment is to be effective as soon as possible following completion of the selection process.


    Individual who is offered employment shall be required to obtain fingerprints for a criminal history clearance through the State Department of Justice and remit the required fee for processing the fingerprints, Federal Bureau of Investigation (no fee if obtained at Cerritos College Campus Police Station), produce an original social security card, and submit negative TB test results (must be within the past four years or within the last 60 days if not previously employed in a school district in California) before employment.

    Proof of eligibility to work in the United States and signing of loyalty oath per Government Codes
