    RCA - Respiratory Care Assistant - Duke University Hospital

    Duke University Hospital is on the lookout for a Respiratory Care Assistant - an enthusiastic respiratory student who has completed their first year of a recognized respiratory program - to join our mission of Advancing Health Together.

    Job Description

    As a Respiratory Care Assistant, you will conduct essential diagnostic and therapeutic procedures as outlined in the Respiratory Care Services scope of clinical practice. Your responsibilities will involve collaborating with a Registered Respiratory Therapist and following physician orders diligently.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    • Verify physician orders to ensure accuracy and appropriateness.
    • Understand pharmacological details including dosages and responses to adverse drug reactions.
    • Provide guidance to patients, families, and healthcare teams based on care assessments and established protocols.
    • Monitor patient response to therapy and maintain accurate records of all procedures.
    • Recognize critical situations and respond promptly, including performing CPR.
    • Ensure all equipment and supplies are correctly set up and functional for patient care.
    • Adhere to infectious disease standards during all patient care procedures.
    • Engage in quality improvement initiatives and uphold safety certifications.
    • Deliver various respiratory therapies such as oxygen administration, airway clearance, and EKG monitoring.

    Required Qualifications at this Level

    Education

    Enrolled in a 2-year accredited respiratory care program (Associates Degree or equivalent) with good standing and completion of the first semester of the program.

    Experience

    No formal experience required beyond clinical exposure during the respiratory program.

    Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification

    Registration with the Board as a student RCP to provide respiratory care procedures and possession of Basic Life Support (BLS) and relevant institution-specific certifications.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    Demonstrated clinical decision-making skills appropriate for various patient age groups and competencies for this role's responsibilities.

    Proficiency in customer service, communication, and commitment to annual skill and safety requirements.

    Physical ability to perform tasks requiring lifting, walking, climbing, and bending.
