- Responsible for oversight of lab activities such as ensuring required levels of lab supplies, scheduling work, and maintaining equipment.
- Ensure compliance with safety regulations in laboratories.
- Understand when GLP compliance is required and be able to work to those standards.
- Perform chemical synthesis as required.
- Perform chemical testing of various types on lenses, injectors, and other relevant items as required. Write Technical Reports as appropriate.
- Perform biochemical testing of various types on lenses, injectors, and other relevant items as required. Write Technical Reports as appropriate.
- Write validation protocols and reports.
- Draft SOPs that relate to the manufacturing and testing of lens and injector materials and other materials related to lens and injector manufacturing.
- Develop sophisticated approaches to the fundamental understanding of materials that compose or are related to lens and injectors or their manufacture to predict and understand behavior.
- Qualify equipment for use in Manufacturing when required while following the STAAR Design Control SOP and other SOPs as appropriate. Document work per SOP.
- Test incoming and in-process materials, including management of testing in outside labs where required.
- Assist Manufacturing personnel when necessary, regarding technical issues in the Manufacturing area.
- Participate in meetings as R&D representative as required and be R&D's lead on chemistry and biochemistry when required to join a multidisciplinary team.
- Other duties as assigned.
- B.S. in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or Biochemistry or related scientific field is required.
- Minimum 8 years' experience as a chemist is required.
- Demonstrated understanding of, and ability to implement, GLP.
- Demonstrated understanding of Design Control and competence to work to this and related SOPs.
- Demonstrated understanding of polymer chemistry, organic chemistry and biochemistry.
- Ability to perform statistical analysis and plot graphs is desirable.
- Must be able to handle multiple projects and effectively prioritize to meet deadlines for specific projects.
- Good organizational skills.
- Must be able to lift 40 pounds.
