    Job Summary

    The Senior Manager, Mechanical Safety is responsible for the mechanical safety system which includes car and motive power. The incumbent collaborates with leadership to support, monitor, and report on the implementation of corporate safety requirements and standards. The role assists with identification of program compliance obligations and support implementations.

    Moreover, the position provides technical expertise to identify safety risks and improvement opportunities while ensuring consistent communication throughout all shop locations.

    In addition, the incumbent liaises with the Corporate Safety group for input on the development and implementation of safety requirements and standards as well as participates in regular injury and accident reviews, supports the overall implementation of the corporate Safety Management System (SMS), and effective root cause analysis.

    Main Responsibilities
    Accident and Injury Reduction Programs

    • Lead consistent safety procedures throughout all shop locations
    • Support the implementation and monitor the effectiveness of safety programs under the direction of the Functional Vice-President and Chief
    • Assist safety engagement process owners
    • Prepare content for safety training, including Safety Summits
    • Identify safety improvement opportunities
    • Provide expertise and support to Leadership in the development and implementation of annual and longer-term Health and Safety (H&S) improvement plans
    Root Cause Analysis and Risk Process

    • Lead, participate, and coach incident root cause analysis
    • Implement corrective and preventative actions and carry out follow-ups
    • Prepare and share learning material
    • Conduct job hazard analyses
    • Facilitate risk assessments for new customers, equipment, processes and follow incident
    • Provide input into risk register
    • Identify risk reduction opportunities
    • Provide input into corporate and functional safe work practices, including policies, rules
    • Support effective implementation of the corporate SMS
    Metrics, Reporting, and Compliance

    • Identify and initiate improvement opportunities via analysis of performance data
    • Provide reports of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to drive performance improvement
    • Ensure quality assurance and control of Systems, Applications and Procedures (SAP) data and report entries
    • Implement and monitor H&S compliance processes and activities as well as initiate improvements
    • Escalate compliance concerns to Management
    • Provide input to corporate Subject Matter Experts (SME) concerning regulatory applicability
    • Create and provide input into procedures to effectively complete compliance tasks
    Health and Safety and Emergency Response

    • Provide support to Management chairs
    • Fill Safety Officer role within Incident Critical Staffing (ICS) Command structure for major accidents with substantial ongoing response
    • Work with Emergency Response group to develop, implement and test emergency response plans
    • Devise strategy and process for safety reporting and follow up closeout
    • Develop safety manual for Mechanical with requirements and update it as needed
    Working Conditions

    The role has standard working conditions in an office environment with a regular workweek from Monday to Friday. The role is required to work outside of standard working hours on occasion.

    Due to the nature of the role, the incumbent must be able to meet tight deadlines, handle pressure, and stress.

    The role requires regular travel (40%) across Canada and the United States (U.S.)

    Requirements
    Experience

    Railroad Operations and Multimodal

    • Minimum 10 years of railroad operations and multimodal experience
    o Experience in industrial safety

    Education/Certification/Designation

    • Bachelor's Degree in a Technical, Business, Human Resources, or related discipline
    • H&S Certification or progressing toward the Board of Canadian Registered Safety Professionals (CRSP) designation**Any designation for these above would be considered as an asset
