    Description

    Primary Purpose of this Position:


    The Safety Technician plays a crucial role in embedding a culture of continuous safety improvement, innovation, and compliance across all levels of the organization.

    This requires dynamic collaboration with both safety and operational teams to observe and refine safety procedures, ensuring that safety integration is seamless and effectively supports both the health and safety of employees and the organizational goals of the organization.

    Interact with employees to enhance their understanding of existing hazards and the best practices to mitigate or control these risks.


    Essential Job Functions:

    • Conduct Audits and Continuous Monitoring : Conduct daily safety audits across all production areas to proactively identify potential hazards and ensure adherence to safety protocols. Directly engage with employees to reinforce safe practices.
    • Hazard Identification and Resolution:

    Actively seek out safety risks and collaborate with production employees and supervisors to develop and assist with the implementation corrective actions promptly, ensuring that ergonomic and safe work practices are tailored to specific operational needs.


    • Safety Training and Coaching:

    Provide immediate, on-the-spot training and safety briefings to address and correct observed unsafe behaviors, as well as develop and maintain up-to-date, effective training materials that are relevant to the operations of the facility.


    • Incident Response and Reporting:

    Assist departments with the initial investigation of incidents and near-misses on the shop floor to ensure thorough documentation and assist with the immediate implementation of corrective measures.

    Prepare and analyze incident reports to identify trends and recommend further safety improvements.

    • Communication and Collaboration:

    Serve as the primary safety contact for the production teams, fostering a collaborative environment where safety and operational efficiency are integrated seamlessly.

    Regularly report safety observations and improvement initiatives to the Safety Manager to ensure strategic alignment with broader organizational safety goals.


    • Record Keeping:
    Maintain accurate and up-to-date records related to safety inspections, training, incidents, and other safety-related activities. Generate reports and analyze data to identify trends and areas requiring improvement.
    Qualifications

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    • Knowledge and understanding of occupational health and safety regulations, codes and standards.
    • Strong analytical skills with the ability to proactively identify hazards and evaluate risks.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including strong interpersonal communication skills.
    • Proficiency or knowledge in using safety equipment, tools and technology.
    • Attention to detail and ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
    • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
    • Strong organizational and time management skills.

    Physical Demands:

    • Stand OCCASIONALLY over the course of the 8 to 10 hour work shift.
    • Walk OCCASIONALLY over the course of the 8 to 10 hour work shift. The distances walked will range from a distance of a few feet to several hundred feet.
    • Sit FREQUENTLY to CONTINUOUSLY over the course of the 8 to 10 hour work shift.
    • Lift weights up to 30 pounds OCCASIONALLY from floor to head level, which includes the various prints, books, binders, and papers utilized to perform the usual work duties.
    • Lift weights up to 50 pounds RARELY to OCCASIONALLY from floor to chest level, which may include boxes of papers, books, etc.
    • Carry weights noted above distances ranging from a few feet to several hundred feet. 50 pounds would be carried 50 feet. Lifting devices are available.
    • Climb OCCASIONALLY onto steps or ladders.
    • Stoop or crouch OCCASIONALLY while performing the regular job duties. Tasks would include looking in filing cabinets, inspecting workplace, and implementing corrective actions. The position will be held continuously for a few seconds to a few minutes, depending upon task.
    • Kneel OCCASIONALLY in the commission of job duties, depending upon the task.
    • Crawl OCCASIONALLY up to 10 feet to plug in equipment, retrieve dropped materials, etc.
    • Reach forward OCCASIONALLY to FREQUENTLY to perform job duties or to retrieve tools. The employee will OCCASIONALLY to FREQUENTLY be required to reach to full forward extension.
    • Reach overhead OCCASIONALLY to retrieve books, supplies, etc.
    • Push and pull drawers open OCCASIONALLY to FREQUENTLY to retrieve tools or supplies.
    • Gross finger dexterity skills required operating the mouse utilized in the course of standard job duties. Fine finger dexterity is not required.

    Other Related Demands:

    • Employee is expected to work 40 hours a week. However, hours including overtime and weekends may be required based on Drake-Williams Steel's needs.
    • Hear sufficiently to be aware of safety issues.
    • Visual ability to read and interpret material to satisfactorily do job.
    • Exposure to heat, cold, wet and humid conditions OCCASIONALLY.
    • Exposure to fumes, odors and dusts OCCASIONALLY.
    • Exposure to solvents, greases, oils, and coolants OCCASIONALLY.
    • Wear all required Personal Protective Equipment. PPE includes ASTM F2413 safety shoes with metatarsal guards, hearing protection, safety glasses, gloves, and hard hats.

    Experience and Education Required:

    • High school diploma or equivalent; additional certification or training in occupational health and safety is preferred.
    • Demonstrable experience in an industrial operational environment with a strong focus on safety practices .
