    Default job background
    Description

    Job Description

Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Laser-Based Mesoscale Thermal Transport Postdoctoral Research Associate. You'll work on advanced laser metrology, designing and implementing photothermal experiments, performing mesoscale measurements of thermal transport properties in actinide material systems, and analyzing results. We ask that you have a demonstrated scientific track record, communication skills, and a background in condensed matter physics, phonon- and electron-mediated heat transport across length-scales and interfaces, continuum-based heat diffusion models, and thermal wave imaging. Knowledge of irradiation and defect effects on material performance is desired. Our team works a 9x80 schedule located out of our Idaho Falls facility with every other Friday off. One of the responsibilities of this position will be leading experimental activities relating to the mesoscopic thermal transport thrust of the Center for Thermal Energy Transport under Irradiation (TETI), a Basic Energy Sciences Energy Frontier Research Center led by Idaho National Laboratory (INL). The postdoctoral research associate will contribute to, and contribute to multi-institution collaborative research projects involving other experimental (crystal synthesis, advanced microstructure characterization) and theoretical (first principles and microstructure evolution modeling) personnel. The postdoctoral research associate will also help develop proposals for new research projects from internal and external funding sources, within a larger goal of expanding INL's Department of Energy Office of Science research portfolio. Technical Responsibilities Include: 1) characterizing structure and function of individual grain boundaries using ultrafast pump-probe photoacoustic spectroscopy 2) designing and implementing state-of-the-art in-pile metrology for monitoring thermal transport in active reactor conditions 3) performing fundamental studies of defect accumulation and material performance in chemically-complex material systems including defect formation, thermal carrier scattering, and strain localization 4) designing ion beam irradiation regimes for both the fundamental study of defect effects in model materials and to emulate those conditions found in operational nuclear systems. Areas of inquiry at the nexus of these technical topics should be pursued and expanded following the laboratory growth strategy in condensed matter physics and materials science. The postdoctoral research associate will also have opportunities representing INL and the Energy and Environment Science and Technology (EES&T) directorate at national and international technical meetings, working groups, etc.Qualifications:Minimum Requirements:

    • PhD in condensed matter physics, materials science or comparable disciplines. PhD requirements must be completed by commencement of appointment and within the previous 5 years.
    • A background in laser metrology (e.g. thermal wave microscopy, coherent acoustic phonon spectroscopy, time resolved measurements).
    • A background in irradiation and defect effects on materials performance with a focus on designing and conducting ion beam irradiation experiments.
    • An interest and background in designing both metals and ceramics for utilization in extreme conditions based on performance characteristics.
    • Demonstrated oral and published written communication skills (in English).
    • Demonstrated ability to propose, compile, and assemble teams for multi-institution responses to Funding Opportunity Announcements.
    • Management and organization skills necessary to successfully meet research and development goals for multi-institution collaborative projects.
