    Description:Installs, maintains, and repairs ship's propulsion and auxiliary systems; including, but not limited to, Steam, Turbine, Electrical, and Diesel propulsion systems, rudders and steering gear, elevators, and Navy UNREP systems.
    Installs, repairs, and maintains ship's fluid systems which include pumps, compressors, purifiers, heat exchangers, actuators and valves.
    Tests equipment to ensure systems meets specifications.
    Installs and tests various shop equipment.
    Repair, troubleshoot, and perform maintenance on boilers, pumps, and valves.

    Working aboard ships on auxiliary equipment, pumps values, boiler systemsPerforms major and specialized mechanical overhaul and repair work on gasoline and marine engines, outboard motors, and related marine equipment and systems using schematic charts and technical manuals.

    Establishes and maintains a preventive maintenance program for marine engines and related marine research equipment.
    Tests marine engines and equipment to determine need for repairs or adjustments.
    Repairs and maintains hydraulic equipment and valves.
    Operates hand and power tools associated with marine engine and equipment repair.
    Assists in fabrication of equipment.

    Additional Skills & Qualifications:Ideal candidate will be a journeyman level Outside Machinist (5+ years)

    Must be DBIDS eligible and able to work on NBSD and NASNIMinimum three years of experience in a related field, or graduate of a Diesel or Aircraft Mechanic training school, or three years in any of the following Navy ratings:

    MM (BT), AD, CM, EN, GS, HT, or MR.Experienced working on board Ships on auxiliary equipment, Diesel engines, Propulsion shafting repairs is a plusMust have the ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, written instructions/ technical manuals.

    Must read have the ability to read and comprehend hydraulic and pneumatic diagramsMust be capable assembling/ installing complex mechanical systems, while meeting alignment criteria of systems and equipment.

    Proficient in use of precision measurement tools.
    Must understand both Imperial and Metric measuring systems.
    Must have shop mathematic skills, with understanding of geometry, trigonometry, and work with decimals and fractions.
    Ability to safely use hand and power tools and portable machining tools.
    Ideally, candidates need to have some shipyard experience working for an actual company after their Navy experience.
    Historically, they have not assessed every E4 MM getting out of the Navy.

    If transitioning straight out of the Navy candidates, ideally will have at least 6+ years' experience, but there still hasn't been consistency on NASSCO's end that they will be selected to assess.
