    Description:

    Microbiologist position that involves sample preparation, media preparation, environmental monitoring, and quality control documentation. The Microbiologist I will provide support for conducting standard and modified microbiological test, fungal tests, and exploratory microbiological studies by other junior and expert microbiologists.

    Under general supervision of Microbiology Lab Manager:

    1. Maintain safe, clean, and organized working environment in the Microbiology Lab, especially the Media Prep Room.

    2. Maintain supplies and equipment in the Microbiology Lab in a safe and organized manner, including the handling of biohazardous or caustic materials and equipment as required.

    − Monitor inventory of reagents, media, and lab supplies to generate order lists.

    − Receive, responsibly manage, and store lab supplies.

    − Discard biological waste according to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

    − Wash, and if necessary, sterilize tools, equipment, and supplies used in lab testing.

    − Arrange and store lab apparatus tools, equipment, and supplies.

    Operate standard microbiology laboratory equipment and instruments that include, but not limited to autoclave, labware washer, analytical balance, hot plate, incubator, pipettes, thermometers, and spectrophotometer.

    As part of the microbiology lab's compliance to ISO 9001 and ISO 17025 standards, conduct routine quality checks that include, but not limited to, media sterility, pipettes, thermometers, media prep equipment, incubators, eye wash stations, autoclaves, and deionized water.

    Prepare, sterilize, and dispense microbiological media.

    Support sample preparation for testing:

    − Cut, weigh, sterilize, and organize test samples in preparation for microbiological analysis.

    − Adhere to Microban's SOPs and protocols to prepare samples and operate instrumentation.

    When required, use aseptic techniques to prepare microbiological media, conduct sterility/quality checks, and plate media to assist microbiologists with testing activities.

    Read and follow documented instructions or protocols to determine media composition ratios.

    − Documents that are routinely used are published internally or externally by organizations such as ISO, AATCC ASTM, and EPA.

    Adhere to Good Documentation Practices (GDocP).

    − Document information and steps in a concise and organized manner in laboratory notebooks and/or logs

    Must be able to operate standard microbiology lab equipment (e.g. microscope, pipette, balance); independently identify (to the extent of authorization) practical and reasonable solutions in situations where only limited standardization exists; conduct and report results of qualitative tests; support quantitative and fungal testing; and the ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

    Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; ability to write routine reports and correspondence; ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.

    The purpose of this job is to conduct activities such that a safe, clean, and organized laboratory environment is maintained to support the research, development, and testing functions of the microbiology laboratory.

    The duties include managing lab supplies inventories, cleaning and preparing lab apparatus for use by microbiologists, preparing microbiological media, discarding lab-generated waste, preparing samples for testing, conducting routine quality checks of lab equipment (including, but not limited to, media prep equipment,

    incubators, eye wash stations, autoclaves), and maintaining quality control documentation.

    EDUCATION

    Prefer a Bachelor's degree, will take an Associate's degree (A.S.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or six months to one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
