- Provide direct instruction and support to students with visual impairments, including those who are blind or have low vision.
- Develop and implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) in collaboration with students, families, and other members of the educational team.
- Adapt and modify curriculum materials to meet the specific needs of visually impaired students, ensuring accessibility and promoting independence.
- Teach essential skills, such as braille literacy, orientation and mobility, adaptive technology, and daily living skills.
- Utilize assistive technology and specialized instructional materials to enhance learning experiences for visually impaired students.
- Collaborate with general education teachers and other specialists to ensure the successful inclusion and participation of visually impaired students in the mainstream classroom.
- Conduct ongoing assessments to monitor student progress and adjust instructional strategies accordingly.
- Provide consultation and support to parents/guardians, offering guidance on adaptive strategies and resources for supporting their child's education at home.
- Collaborate with related service providers, such as orientation and mobility specialists and occupational therapists, to address the specific needs of visually impaired students.
- Stay updated on best practices in the field of visual impairment education through professional development opportunities and continuing education.
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Special Education with a focus on visual impairment, or a related field.
- Valid teaching certification in Visual Impairment or Special Education (CA certification is a plus).
- Prior experience working as a Teacher for the Visually Impaired, preferably in a school setting.
- Knowledge of specialized instructional strategies and accommodations for students with visual impairments.
- Proficiency in braille literacy and experience teaching braille to students.
- Familiarity with assistive technology and adaptive equipment used by visually impaired individuals.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with students, families, and multidisciplinary teams.
- Patience, empathy, and a genuine passion for supporting visually impaired students in their educational journey.
- Ability to adapt instructional methods and materials to meet the unique needs of each student.
