    Position description

    Overview:

    The Robbins Collection in Religious and Civil Law at the University of California, School of Law (Berkeley Law) is seeking a Cataloging and Metadata Librarian responsible for cataloging print materials, especially rare books, chiefly in Latin and modern European languages. This will include original and complex copy cataloging according to national rules and standards and the corresponding authority control. The successful candidate will have experience cataloging rare books and single-item manuscripts, advanced reading proficiency of Latin and knowledge of other European languages, familiarity current cataloging rules of description (RDA), LC subject headings and classification, MARC coding, OCLC and local cataloging systems. Requirements also include knowledge of the specifics of rare materials cataloging.

    Berkeley Law is one of the nation's premier law schools, located at one of the world's great universities. Berkeley Law confers degrees in two instructional programs for more than 900 graduate students. The school has 53 FTE ladder-rank faculty, over 100 other academic staff (lecturers, emeriti, and visitors), a law library, a rare books and special collections library, two organized research units, a clinical program, and specialized academic centers.

    The mission of the Robbins Collection is to promote and sponsor comparative research and study in the fields of religious and civil law, and its materials attract students and leading scholars from universities and research institutions around the world. Although independently funded, the Robbins Collection's location at Berkeley Law greatly enhances the educational aspect of its mission, providing unique educational opportunities for students interested in comparative and historical approaches to law. The Collection houses more than 340,000 titles on such topics as civil law, comparative law, jurisprudence, legal history, and religious law encompassing the canon law of the Roman and Greek churches, Jewish law and Islamic law. The Collection's holdings include more than 300 manuscript books, more than 300 incunables, more than 150 manuscript documents and fragments, electronic resources for historical legal research, and microfilms of the Canon and Roman law manuscripts in the Vatican Library.

    JOB DESCRIPTION
    Under the general direction of the Director of the Robbins Collection Library at Berkeley Law the Cataloging and Metadata Librarian for Rare Materials will:

    ● Create, maintain, and enrich metadata representing the Robbins Collection's physical, digital, and virtual collections, particularly original and complex copy cataloging of printed books from the 15th to the 21st centuries in Latin and various modern European languages.
    ● Prepare full descriptive MARC21/RDA catalog records and updates existing records, using RDA and DCRM
    ● Assigns Library of Congress subject headings to new and existing records according to national standards and local practice
    ● Performs authority control and may work with a team of UC Berkeley catalogers to establish and revise name headings in the LC/NACO Authority File according to NACO policies.
    ● Work collaboratively with library colleagues, metadata services community and administration.
    ● Contribute to development, implementation and assessment of metadata policies and procedures to Robbins Collection Library at Berkeley Law
    ● Participate in library and campus planning committees and task forces, and campus, regional, and national professional development activities.

    Advancement in the Librarian series at UC Berkeley is based in part on professional contributions beyond the primary assignment, e.g., active participation in university and professional settings, publications or other research and creative activity. The successful candidate will show promise or evidence of such contributions.

    Qualifications
    Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
    Candidate must hold an advanced degree

    Preferred qualifications
    • Master's degree in library and information science from an ALA-accredited institution, or equivalent degree, with a specialization in archival studies
    • An advanced degree in law or the humanities (preferably in Medieval or Early Modern Studies).
    • 2-4 years of experience working as a special collection's librarian or archivist.
    • Demonstrated experience creating bibliographic description of rare books including transcription, collation, and copy-specific information and notes.
    • Demonstrated experience in MARC 21 cataloging, including experience with RDA and/or AACR2, DACS, AMREMM, and the DCRM suite.
    • Reading knowledge of Latin and at least one European language other than English.
    • Ability to meet a high standard of quality of work independently and expeditiously.
    • Thorough knowledge of online resources and applications and search techniques as well as an understanding of trends in access to digital information and scholarly publishing.
    • Demonstrated experience working with online cataloging systems, especially OCLC Connexion.
    • Demonstrated experience with applying Library of Congress Subject Headings
    • Knowledge of paleography.
    • Experience working in an Integrated Library System environment, especially Innovative Interfaces Inc.'s Sierra.
    • Familiarity with Library of Congress Classification Schedules for Robbins Collection core materials.
    • Experience in the creation of name authority records, preferably for contribution to the Library of Congress as part of the NACO program
    • Demonstrated understanding of the principles of arrangement and description of archival collections.
    • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and ensure regular workflows
    • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment.
    • Evidence of strong interpersonal and communication skills, as well as initiative and flexibility.
