    Job Summary



    The Department of Biochemistry & Biophysics is a large teaching and research department within the School of Medicine, and is comprised of 27 primary faculty, 25 joint faculty, 58 non-faculty academic staff, 85 postdoctoral fellows, about 120 graduate students, and 100 non-academic staff. The Center for Advanced Technology (CAT) is an open-access technology facility that serves scientist at UCSF and the general region. A key function of the CAT is in R&D efforts to develop new and improved methods in next generation sequencing (NGS).

    As a technician in the CAT, the employee is responsible for working in several areas. First is to support COVID surveillance efforts with the California Department of Public Health by preparing samples for sequencing, checking them for quality, and running them on our NGS platforms which include Illumina NovaSeq systems. Second, the employee will also work on developing new sample preparation methods in areas such as single cell sequencing and metagenomic sequencing. Lastly, the employee will be involved in CAT operations, which include participating in the training and sequencing operations that serve the scientific community at UCSF and beyond.

    Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

    For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

    Department Description



    The Department of Biochemistry & Biophysics is a large teaching and research department within the School of Medicine. The department offers graduate studies in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Developmental Biology, Systems Biology, and Genetics degree programs, in addition to providing courses for medical, dental, and pharmacy students. Each program includes interdepartmental faculty representing: the Cancer Center, Medicine, Pharmacy, Physiology, Pediatrics, Microbiology, Pathology, Anatomy, Psychiatry and Neurology departments, as well as our own. In addition to offering course work, the department's other main goal is to provide an environment where outstanding research in diverse areas of interest is conducted. A close, collaborative spirit among faculty facilitates a research atmosphere that is both productive and exciting. Moreover, many colleagues from other departments have joint appointments with Biochemistry, which forms an added active pool of investigators with whom we closely collaborate.



    Required Qualifications



  • BS or BA in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Engineering, Biochemistry or a related science and one or more years of recent, directly related work experience, utilizing the techniques or methods required by the position; and/or an equivalent combination of experience/training
  • Ability to make analytical calculations efficiently (molarity, dilution calculations)
  • Able to perform basic molecular biology techniques including DNA cloning, PCR, gel electrophoresis
  • Effective communication skills
  • Aptitude for technology and instrumentation


  • Preferred Qualifications



  • Experience with DNA sequencing
  • Experience with qPCR
  • One year of experience performing research
  • Knowledge and experience with Illumina DNA sequencers
