Job Description:
Purpose of Position/Summary:
This position serves as the Indiana Birth Defects and Problems Registry (IBDPR) Epidemiologist for the Genomics and Newborn Screening (GNBS) program within the Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Division. The primary purpose of this position is to analyze data, investigate clusters, evaluate programs, and produce reports.
Essential Duties / Responsibilities:
This position collaborates directly with the GNBS Program Director, the Indiana Birth Defects and Problems Registry (IBDPR) Program Manager, the Office of Public Affairs (OPA), national organizations, local community health leaders and healthcare providers, both within and outside the state of Indiana.
This position is responsible for analysis of birth defects and other genetic conditions to monitor incidence, prevalence, trends, clusters, and disparities.
The IBDPR will implement public health initiatives based on the data. Other responsibilities and regular tasks include, but are not limited to, the following activities." Analyze data and report conclusions.
" Give presentations to team and stakeholders.
" Manage multiple projects at once.
" Develop studies to gain more information.
" Other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements:
Education:
Applicant should have a master's degree in epidemiology, biostatistics or another related field.
Experience:
Applicant is required to have a minimum of 1-2 years of experience with data analysis, and experience with database systems is preferred.
Knowledge/Skills: Position requires knowledge of epidemiology, public health, birth defects, and genetic conditions. Skills in SAS, SPSS, or Excel are required. The ability to comprehend and apply federal and state laws, rules, and regulations related and applicable to project tasks is required.
Additional knowledge and skills include the following:
" Strong presentation skills.
" Ability to problem solve complex issues.
" Detail oriented to ensure nothing is missed.
" Ability to design public health studies.
Communication:
Position requires the ability to communicate data and statistics effectively in both written and verbal form, with persons of various educational and social backgrounds.
Additionally, this position requires the ability to communicate with and speak in front of large groups.Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:
This is not a supervisory position.
Difficulty of Work:
The work is broad in scope, involving mathematical and analytical skills, project organization, process management, time management, and administrative abilities.
Applicant uses Federal and State regulations and guidelines, but judgment is required when evaluating and applying to individual situations.Personal Work Relationships:
Applicant works with intra-agency staff, representatives from various State and Federal agencies, birth defects surveillance programs from other states, physicians, community leaders, genetic counselors, geneticists, other health care providers, laboratory personnel, professional organizations, advocacy groups, hospital staff, as well as media and public relations.
Physical Effort:
This position does not require extensive physical effort.
Working Conditions:
Applicant works primarily at the Indiana Department of Health office. Minimal travel may be required for national conferences.
