    OPPORTUNITY

    National 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) nonprofit organizations seek experienced nonprofit finance leader to join our management team as the Vice President of Finance & Administration at our Minneapolis, MN office.

    Exceptional candidates in other parts of the country may be considered. This position is open due to an upcoming retirement and is an exempt role.

    ORGANIZATION

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    The Vice President of Finance and Administration (VPF&A) is a key strategic partner and advisor to the Executive Director, Deputy Executive Director, and other members of the executive leadership team.

    This role is critical in maintaining and enhancing the financial health of our organization through collaborative efforts.

    The VPF&A has a substantial impact on both the day-to-day finance and administrative operations and the long-term strategic direction of the BGA Foundation (501(c)(3)) and BGA, Inc (501(c)(4)), providing financial analysis, short- and long-term planning, administrative effectiveness and nonprofit sector expertise to strengthen its financial position.

    With a finance team of three, the VPF&A must also be able to roll up their sleeves and dive into the details when needed.

    The VPF&A is a highly visible leader who models the organization's labor movement values, fostering a positive union-management relationship with our bargaining unit and playing a key role in bargaining negotiations.

    The ideal candidate is a seasoned nonprofit finance and administration leader experienced in ensuring DEIJ principles and practices are employed throughout a remote-hybrid organization.

    Additionally, the successful candidate has a track record of effectively communicating complex financial information to a variety of audiences including board members, funders, donors, partners, staff, etc.

    Qualified candidates must have 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) nonprofit finance and accounting experience. Up to 20% travel is required for this role to attend in-person organization events in Washington D.C. and various states as needed.
    The VPF&A reports to the Executive Director and supervises the Finance Director.

    Essential duties of this role:

    Financial Strategy and Oversight:
    Provide counsel to the Executive Director and Deputy Executive Director and other key members of management on financial planning, budgeting, cash flow, fundraising priorities, and policy matters;
    Serve as the management liaison on both BGA and BGAF board's Audit, Compensation and Corporate Contribution committees; effectively communicate and present critical financial matters at board meetings;

    Lead the development of appropriate annual, mid-term, and long-term financial objectives and plans that align with the organization's strategic direction.

    Collaborating with the Deputy Executive Director, contribute to the development of BGA's strategic goals and objectives as well as the overall management of the organization;

    Oversee the annual financial planning and budgeting process through training and mentorship, while assisting department managers in budget preparation and ensuring there is flexibility in the process.

    Oversee budgeting for special projects and the financial strategies regarding funding sought.

    Oversee the financial and accounting operations of the organization, including cash management, accounts payable, expense reimbursements, accounts receivable and collections, fixed asset and investments accounting.

    Represent the organization externally, as necessary, particularly in labor, banking and lease negotiations;
    Maintain primary relationship with legal counsel;
    In partnership with Executive Director and Deputy Executive Director lead bargaining unit contract negotiation, implementing all changes required to adhere to contract;
    Represent executive management on Labor Management Committee and in collective bargaining agreement negotiations;
    Ensure organizational finance and administrative policies are fair, inclusive and promote diversity;
    Ensure preparation of the annual financial report and audit schedules in compliance with nonprofit GAAP.
    Oversee annual audit and other audit activities as applicable.
    Maintain internal reporting system and account structure to ensure proper disclosure and accountability for all financial activities.

    Monitor financial activities at all levels to ensure due diligence and compliance with fiscal and grantor policies and Board-approved budget.


    Team Management and Development:
    Oversee, hire and direct the team responsible for the financial and administrative operations of both organizations;
    Promote a culture of high performance and continuous improvement that values learning and a commitment to quality;
    Working closely with the Director of People and Culture, ensure staff members receive timely and appropriate training and development;
    Mentor and develop staff using a supportive and collaborative approach: assign accountabilities, set objectives, establish priorities, and monitor and evaluate results;
    Demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion through continuous development, modeling inclusive behaviors, and proactively managing bias;
    Assess internal department operations, identify and implement improvements to systems and processes.

    Administration:
    Maintain continuous lines of communication, keeping the Executive Director and Deputy Executive Director informed of finance, administrative, and personnel issues;
    Oversee the upgrading and implementation of an appropriate system of policies, internal controls, accounting standards, and procedures;
    Provide analytical support to BGA/F's executive management team including development of internal management reporting capabilities;
    Oversee all third-party reporting, testing and audits e.g. lobbyist reporting, work comp audits, 401k testing/audit, sales tax reporting/audits;
    Working with Auditors, prepare and file 990s, 990T, and all other state or federal filings as required;
    Oversee, prepare and review all letters of agreement, contracts, and leases;
    Oversee the required reporting related to taxes, compliance and risk management.
    Oversee administration of employment benefits;

    Fundraising Coordination and Support:
    Working closely with Vice President of Development, assist to build and monitor annual development plan.?
    Provide the financial, accounting and budgeting support needed for organization fundraising activities.
    Monitor c3/c4 clarity in fundraising proposals and communications;
    Review, sign and return grants and contracts, when needed.??
    Requirements

    SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
    Proven effectiveness leading management to understand financial goals and budgeting;
    Deep understanding of 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) organizations;
    Ability to operate as an effective tactical as well as strategic thinker;
    Proven track record of success facilitating progressive organizational change and development within a growing organization;
    Excellent judgment and creative problem-solving skills including negotiation and conflict-resolution skills;
    Strong mentoring, coaching experience to a team with diverse levels of expertise;
    Superior management skills; ability to influence and engage direct and indirect reports and peers
    Flexible, collaborative, and proactive;
    Exceptional written, oral, interpersonal, and presentation skills and the ability to effectively interface with senior management, BGA and BGAF's board of directors, and staff
    Excellence in modelling giving and receiving constructive feedback
    High ethical standards, sound judgment, and ability to maintain professional confidentiality;
    Ability to travel as needed;
    Ease with cloud-based technology platforms and Microsoft Office Suite.

    EXPERIENCE
    Required
    Undergraduate degree in finance, accounting, or business administration;
    Minimum of 10 years of experience in nonprofit accounting and finance, including:

    • Minimum of 5 years of technical 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) accounting experience;
    • Minimum of 5 years overseeing a department and managing staff;
    Significant experience with financial management and accounting in an organization with complex funding streams.
    Preferred
    Graduate degree or MBA in Finance or Accounting;
    CPA and/or other finance or accounting professional designation;
    Experience/knowledge working on issues related to climate change, environmental or labor issues.

    COMPENSATION
    A compensation package including competitive salary with annual COLA increases and employer-funded benefits is available.
    Salary
    The salary range is $155,000 - $185,000 yearly, exempt. BGA utilizes salary bands to ensure pay equity and transparency. Final salary within the salary range will be based on experience level and qualifications.
