    Description

    Job Summary:

    Radiation Therapist integrates scientific knowledge, technical competence and patient interaction skills to provide safe and accurate treatment with compassion. A radiation therapist recognizes patient conditions essential for the successful completion of simulation and treatment.

    **Reports to: **Radiation Oncologist-- Radiation Physicist -- Department Manager -- Lead Therapist

    Essential Functions

    Provides optimal patient care.

    Receives, relays and documents verbal, written and electronic orders in the patient's radiation oncology record.

    Corroborates a patient's clinical history with procedure and ensuring information is documented and available for sure by a licensed practitioner.

    Verifies informed consent for applicable procedure.

    Evaluates images for technical quality and ensuring proper identification is recorded.

    Performs ongoing quality assurance activities.

    Applies the principles of patient safety during all aspects of patient care.

    Delivers radiation therapy treatments as prescribed by a radiation oncologist.

    Performs simulations, treatments planning procedures and dosimetric calculations as prescribed by a radiation oncologist.

    Uses imaging technologies for the explicit purpose of simulation, treatment planning and treatment delivery as prescribed by a radiation oncologist.

    Detects and reports significant changes in patients' conditions and determining when to withhold treatment until the radiation oncologist is consulted.

    Monitors doses to normal tissue within the irradiated volume to ensure tolerance levels are not exceeded.

    Constructs/prepares immobilization, beam directional and beam modification devices.

    Participates in brachytherapy procedures as needed.

    Accurately explains simulation/treatment procedures to patients/family prior to beginning procedure.

    Demonstrates solid understanding of the equipment operation and attached components.

    Reports all equipment issues to the Radiation Physicist, Department Manager or Lead Therapist. Communicates all information concerning equipment issues to the service engineers.

    Demonstrates accurate manipulation/knowledge of accelerator, treatment table, gantry, hand pendants, electron cones, console, wedge placement, emergency stops, intercom, TV cameras, laser accuracy, etc.

    Demonstrates competency with simulator, simulates radiation treatment fields according to Radiation Oncologist.

    Demonstrates competency with linear accelerators, radiation oncology record and verify systems, portal vision, on board imaging for treatment delivery and CT scanners for simulation.

    Required Skills

    Minimum Education: **** High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

    Graduate of Committee of Allied Health Education and Accreditation accredited education program on Radiologic Technology/Radiation Therapy Program.

    Required License: Radiologic Technologists and Technicians

    Certification by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologist (ARRT)

    Licensed by the State of Kentucky Board of Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy

    BLS Certification

    Required Skills: **** Radiation therapist must demonstrate an understanding of human anatomy, human physiology, pathology and medical terminology.

    In addition, comprehension of oncology, radio-biology, radiation physics, radiation oncology techniques, radiation safety and the psychosocial aspects of cancer are required.

    They must maintain a high degree of accuracy in positioning and treatment techniques.

    Radiation therapist must possess, use and maintain knowledge about radiation protection and safety.

    Radiation therapist assist the radiation oncologist to localize the treatment area, participate in the treatment planning and deliver high doses of ionizing radiation as prescribed by the radiation oncologist.

    Required Experience

    Work Experience: Experience preferred but not required.

    Qualifications:
    Minimum Education: **** High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
