    Under the direction of the Lab Manager is responsible for performing a variety of tests on blood, tissues, body fluids and exudates. Employs techniques in chemistry, immunology, hematology, urinalysis, routine microscopy, immunohematology, and bacteriology to obtain data for use in diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Is responsible for determining morphology of blood cells and formed elements in the blood, responsible for carrying out chemical analysis of blood, tissues and body fluids to determine concentration of many types of chemical constituents, responsible for assuming complete technical responsibility for carrying out many laboratory tests beginning with written or verbal receipt of request, and including obtaining of blood or other sample, identification of specimen, technical analysis, instrument maintenance, computation and verification of reasonableness and accuracy of result, timely recording and reporting of results.
    • Collects appropriately and labels all specimens accurately.
    • Demonstrates proper use, maintenance and trouble shooting of certain specified technical equipment in the laboratory, as well as keeping same in clean and accurately functioning condition.
    • Knows and understands the correct procedures used for drawing blood in infectious disease areas, nursery, surgery and other special care areas.
    • Will perform hematology, coagulation, special and routine chemistry, bacteriology, blood banking, urinalysis serology and blood gases.
    • Detects errors and any unusual and/or abnormal results and handles them appropriately.
    • Records test results accurately by developing & following appropriate proofreading & error checking methods.
    • Makes proper decisions based on facts, policies and recognition of contributing factors.
    • Transmits facts and concepts clearly both verbally & in writing to a variety of persons within and outside the laboratory.
    Job Relationships:
    • Responsible to: Laboratory Manager, Laboratory Supervisor, Section Supervisor, Consults with: Staff Pathologists
    • Workers supervised: Students
    • Interrelationships: All laboratory/nursing/hospital personnel, patients, general public and visitors, Physicians and their office personnel, Vendor representatives (sales and service) , accreditation inspectors.
    Requirements
    • Associates degree in chemical, physical, biological science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution;
    • National registration by ASCP/HEW as an MLT or equivalent; or qualify as Laboratory testing personnel as defined by CLIA 88 regulations.
    • Previous Hospital experience preferred.

For tests not performed on-site, Delta Health uses the Mayo Medical Laboratory in Rochester, Minnesota, as our primary reference lab.
