    Responsibilities


    The specialist in poison information (SPI) is an experienced nurse who serves as an expert clinical consultant to physicians and healthcare providers as well as an advocate for patients ensuring poisoned patients are seen promptly and treated expertly to resolve their toxicity.

    The SPI consults with healthcare providers from all healthcare facilities in Kentucky.

    The incumbent works under the supervision of a certified specialist in poison information (CSPI) or pharmacist certified via the American Board of Applied Toxicology (ABAT) to independently assess the degree of clinical toxicity and choose the most appropriate course of therapy to improve the patient's clinical progress in the most appropriate and efficient manner.

    Communication is accomplished in a remote fashion with the medical team.

    For patients contacting the center directly, the SPI assesses the need for medical care, provides instructions for pre-hospital management, and alerts the healthcare based medical team to the needs of the incoming patient.

    The incumbent also works directly with 911 and pre-hospital emergency medical providers to provide consultation for treatment and stabilization of patients on-site and during transport.

    Candidates are nurses with excellent clinical, interpersonal, and communication skills.

    Must be able to work independently and effectively manage tasks in a fast-paced environment, communicating telephonically and simultaneously managing multiple medical databases and electronic documentation.

    Must be a team player with a positive attitude able to work in a multi-disciplinary environment.

    Qualifications


    Required:

    • One year in critical care
    • Diploma Nursing
    • Registered Nurse (KY)
    • Specialists in Poison Information - Must move to the certified specialist position within two years of eligibility for the certification exam.

    Desired:

    • One year in poison control center
    • Bachelor Degree Nursing
