    Position Summary:

    Odyssey Systems has an exciting new opportunity for a Molecular Genetics Technologist who will support the Travis Air Force Base (AFB) David Grant Medical Center/Clinical Investigation Facility (CIF), which consists of the Clinical Investigations Program (CIP). Their mission is assisting with the execution of DoD medical research requirements accomplished through the performance of clinical studies and programs. This position is located at Travis AFB in Fairfield, CA.

    Responsibilities:

    Duties include, but not limited to:

    • Must obtain and maintain NIH and CITI training in accordance with local IRB policy.
    • Review and understand biomedical research protocols, ensuring applicable regulations and guidelines are followed.
    • Coordinate with external monitors and internal quality assurance to assure compliance with protocol, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), regulations and guidelines.
    • Support and maintain clinical study regulatory readiness and actively participate in regulatory inspections. May serve as audit host for regulatory inspections for the 60th MDG CIF program.
    • Develop Lateral Flow Immunoassays, and other molecular genetic technology-related testing but not specifically outlined. Batch received specimens, perform nucleic acid extractions (manual and automatic), prepare agarose gels, set up all molecular biology and chemical reactions, operate automated genetic testing instruments, perform quality assurance/control checks, collect and report quality indicator data, evaluate test results, prepare final reports, release reviewed reports in to the LIS system, and other related laboratory tasks. Troubleshoot and critically solve problems as they arise.
    • Support performance of work rotations in all areas of a research molecular/ genetic lab suite for specialized laboratory assays including but not limited to: DNA and RNA extraction, Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), Reverse Transcriptase PCR, Gel Electrophoresis, Restriction Enzyme Digest, Probe Hybridization, Microarray Technology, Lateral Flow Assay, and other related research laboratory testing and development. Partially assists in microbiology, histology, and core laboratory as needed.
    • Follow universal guidelines for the handling of body fluid, clean and fill specimen containers with various solutions. Perform quality assurance and quality control procedures. Sort, number and label specimens in specified sequence. Centrifuge and separate specimens and decant serum. Check media solutions for quality standards. Examine reagents for contamination, impurities or instability. Centrifuge specimen. Reject unsatisfactory specimens
    • Prepare specimens in accordance with standard operating procedures. Set up specimen tests, controls, and provide interpretation. Dispose properly of laboratory specimen and waste material. Operate autoclave, drying oven or dishwasher. Wash and or sterilize laboratory glassware and instruments. Assign identification number to specimens. Pick up/deliver blood and other specimens from/to laboratory.
    • Prepare and pack samples for shipment to outside laboratories. Receive, sort and transport laboratory specimens.
    • Dispose of used syringes and contaminated materials. Inventory equipment and supplies. Maintain solutions, chemicals and automatic equipment. Replenish supplies and equipment.
    • Develop and deliver training in quality assurance/quality control for clinical studies as necessary. Provide for methods to assess competency and maintain supporting documentation.
    • Assume other activities and responsibilities from time to time as specified by management.
    Qualifications:

    Minimum Qualifications:

    Citizenship: Must be a US citizen

    Clearance: Ability to obtain A Secret Clearance

    Education: Bachelor of Science in either clinical laboratory science, genetics, molecular genetic technology, biology, or related field

    Years experience:

    • One to three (1-3) year(s) of experience as a medical/research genetic technologist or related laboratory technician.
    • Must be familiar with lateral flow assays and ELISA testing.
    • Tech Work with all types of Molecular Biology techniques including: ELISA, DNA and RNA extraction, Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), Reverse Transcriptase PCR, Southern and Western Blotting, Gel Electrophoresis, Restriction Enzyme Digest, Capillary Electrophoresis, Sanger Sequencing, Probe Hybridization, Bead Capture Technology, and Microarray Technology
    • Proficient with office equipment (e.g., computers, multi-line telephone system, voicemail, facsimile, copier, printers), as well as business software for word processing, presentations, spreadsheets, database management, and email communications. This includes, but is not limited to, Microsoft Office 2003 (i.e., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).

    Certifications: ASCP certified in Molecular Genetics (CLSp MB).

    Interpersonal Skills:

    • Able to read, write, and speak English fluently in order to effectively communicate with all personnel eligible for medical care and the staff of the military medical treatment facility (MTF). Have the ability to enunciate with sufficient clarity to be readily understood by patients and staff.
    • Sufficient initiative, interpersonal relationship skills and social sensitivity such that they can relate constructively to a variety of patients and staff from diverse backgrounds.
    • Excellent time management and communication skills; able to work in a team environment and concurrently support several active clinical research projects

    Preferred Qualifications:

    Clearance: Active Secret Clearance

    Education: MS degree in genetics or related field.
