    Assignment(s)/Comments: The individual hired to fill this position is being hired into an E-Verify site which contains Federal tax Information (FTI), as defined in IRS Publication 1075.     Class Definition

    GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: To supervise and be responsible for a service or clinic at the Rhode Island Veterans' Home (RIVH); to be responsible for the maintenance of standards of care and treatment for such service or clinic; and to do related work as required.
    SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the general supervision of a physician of higher rank from whom assignments are received in broad outline with considerable latitude for the exercise of independent judgment; work is reviewed through conferences and/or reports for conformance to policies and objectives and/or adherence to accepted medical practices and techniques.
    SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Plans, organizes, supervises, and reviews the work of a staff of physicians, nurses and/or practical nurses and attendants assigned to a service or clinic.

    Illustrative Examples of Work Performed

    To supervise and be responsible for a service or clinic at the Rhode Island Veterans' Home (RIVH); to be responsible for the maintenance of standards of care and treatment for such service or clinic; and to do related work as required.

    To be responsible for reception and treatment diagnosis, continued treatment, acute treatment, disturbed treatment, medical, tubercular, geriatric and, physical medicine and rehabilitation services; or any out-patient, follow-up clinic at the Center engaged in providing various care and treatment services; or discharge patients or patients living outside the Center on a trial visit basis to determine the advisability of continuing or amending the originally prescribed therapy and/or medication.

    To be responsible for the maintenance of and adherence to accepted standards of care and treatment for such service or clinic.

    To be responsible for conducting regularly scheduled service clinics with physicians of higher rank, subordinate physicians and members of other related services within the Center to discuss and evaluate new admissions, problem cases and potential discharges or transfers on an individual basis and to participate in and contribute to the making of decisions and/or recommendations relative to such patients such as: diagnosis, prognosis, care and treatment; physical occupational, recreational or work therapy; hospital and/or ground privileges, trial visits or outside the Center; or, referrals to other psychiatric, medical or surgical services within the Center, as required, for further disposition.

    To administer and/or prescribe appropriate care and treatment involving difficult or complex cases.

    To make daily rounds and to supervise and review the work of a staff of physicians, nurses and/or practical nurses and attendants engaged in providing care and treatment to patients; to evaluate such patient care and treatment in terms of results obtained; and, where necessary, to recommend a new, supplementary, or amended program of care and treatment. As required, to instruct staff physicians and residents in training through lectures, demonstration clinics, staff conferences and on-the-job clinical experience as part of the medical educational program at the Center.

    To give lectures and conduct demonstrations for physicians, nurses and/or practical nurses, student nurses and attendants involving care and treatment methods and techniques.

    To do related work as required.

    Required Qualifications for Appointment

    KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND CAPACITIES: A thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques in the field of general medicine and the skill to apply such knowledge in the diagnosis, care and treatment of patients; a through knowledge of the basic drugs, medicines, and medications used in the care and treatment of patients; the ability to detect, analyze, evaluate and interpret symptoms of diseases and to administer and/or prescribe appropriate care and treatment; the ability to handle the difficult or complex type cases of a service or clinic; the ability to plan, organize, supervise and review the work of a staff of physicians, nurses and/or practical nurses and attendants assigned to a service or clinic; the ability to instruct staff physicians, residents and students in the Center educational programs; the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors and associates, patients, nurses and attendants and other institutional or hospital personnel, other agencies and institutions, community organizations, and the public; and related capacities and abilities.

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Education: Graduation from a medical school of recognized standing supplemented by advanced study in general medicine; and Experience: Completion of an internship in an approved hospital and completion of at least three years of residency in the field of general medicine in an approved hospital, or if there is no such residency, employment as a staff physician in the field general medicine in a hospital, institution, clinic or medical facility engaged in providing care and treatment to patients.

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Must meet established requirements of the Rhode Island Department of Health to practice medicine in Rhode Island and must maintain such requirements as a condition of employment.
