The Director Data Steward / Governance manages a team of business Data Scientists responsible for establishing standards, improving data quality and ensuring that Michaels analytics team has the necessary data and tools to allow incremental and transformational performance across the organization.
This role is positioned to support teams across the entire organization and ensures team members have the technology capabilities required to conduct modeling, SQL-based querying, and advanced dashboarding with automation where applicable.**Major Activities**
**Data Stewardship:**
Drive the evolution of the Customer Data Platform to continue to broaden the landscape of analytics capabilities for Michaels
Responsible for ensuring data availability, accuracy, and fidelity are behind all data platforms, including the Customer Data Platform, for Michaels team member use
Establish a knowledge repository for our analysts to share best practices and build capabilities
Act as point of escalation when unexpected issues and/or new requirements are surfaced, and guide those issues to resolution
Evaluate data quality and establish a data quality score for key metrics
Conduct cross organizational training as required
Ensure Michaels teams have the best tools/resources available and proactively evaluate opportunities for new and different approaches to company challenges
**Cross-Team Collaboration:**
Act as the key contact and business owner to our CDP vendor and other customer data vendors
Partner with IT to enable accurate and reliable data analytics across multiple platforms
Evaluate, plan, and execute analytics projects as-needed to serve leaders across the organization (including marketing, merchandising, store operations and others)
Present data and insights to business leaders in a clear and concise manner
**Team Leadership:**
Hire, retain, and develop outstanding and diverse staff through ownership of our data science hiring processes, brand, and functional leadership of data scientists
Lead and develop a team of data scientists. Invest in your teams skills, tools, and processes to improve their velocity

**Minimum Education**
Bachelors Degree in quantitative field, Masters preferred
**Minimum Special Certifications or Technical Skills**
Fluent in data fundamentals: SQL, data manipulation using a procedural language (R, Python), statistics, experimentation, and modeling
**Minimum Type of Experience the Job Requires**
A minimum of 5-10 years of relevant work experience in data science for a consumer product or retail company
3+ years of experience managing data scientists
Proven experience partnering with executive staff on data topics
Professional experience as a data science leader, setting the vision for how to most effectively use data in your organization.
**Other**
Excellent written and verbal communication skills on quantitative topics for a variety of audiences: product managers, designers, engineers, and business leaders
Proven track record of using data to provide actionable business results
