Director of Athletics and Student Activities


SUMMARY


Under general supervision, directs the MPS Athletics and Student Activities (ASA) programs; directs staff, programs, operations, schedules, regulatory compliance, administrative functions, and budgets.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Directs Athletics and Student Activities (ASA) student programs including all extra-curricular and co-curricular programs, exercises independent judgment within broad policy guidelines; provides leadership, direction, and guidance in ASA program administration and policies.
  • Directs Athletics Department operations to maintain effective and efficient sports programs; assures compliance with federal, state and local regulations, and MPS policies and procedures.
  • Directs and coordinates a variety of athletics, competition, sports, and recreational, educational and fundraising programs in support of MPS goals.
  • Leads ASA programs to provide an orderly, organized, and rewarding experience for students.
  • Advises coaches to teach student athletes the fundamental skills, knowledge and techniques of sportsmanship, leadership, and positive behavior; assures enforcement of rules and safety standards.
  • Monitors eligibility of student athletes, and verifies compliance with the rules and policies of the District and the North Dakota High School Activities Association (NDHSAA). Manage NDHSAA and West Region tournaments in Minot.
  • Directs the development of solutions for Department issues; monitors and evaluates Department work groups, and assures that the services and work products meet quality and safety standards. 
  • Assures the effective allocation and utilization of resources; manages contracts for special services.
  • Facilitates and manages purchase and inventory of ASA equipment, materials, and supplies.
  • Manages ASA staff, develops priorities, and assigns tasks and projects; develops staff skills, training plans, and cross-training of program staff; meets regularly with staff to discuss and resolve priorities, workload, special assignments, problems, staff development, and technical issues.
  • Manages ASA staff performance, productivity, and continuous improvement of the program operations.
  • Analyzes financial information on ASA operations; reviews and monitors status reports and budgets, and recommends appropriate actions; effectively communicates program compliance issues.
  • Supports the relationship between the Minot Public School District and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with clients, visitors, and District staff; maintains absolute confidentiality of work-related issues, client records, and District information; follows compliance rules governing child abuse; performs related duties as required or assigned. 
  • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS


    Education, Training and Experience Guidelines 


    Bachelor's Degree in Athletics or Recreation Administration, Sports Management or related field; AND five years experience as a coach or athletic director in an educational environment; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

    Knowledge of: 


  • MPS organization, operations, policies, and procedures.
  • Federal, state and local policies, rules, and regulations governing the conduct and safety of athletics programs, student programs, and recreational facilities in an educational environment, including the North Dakota Department of Public Instruction and other governing agencies.
  • Training and coaching techniques for individual sports, including athlete's eligibility, and rules for athletic games and sporting competitions.
  • Purpose, use, and benefits of athletics and student recreation programs and activities.
  • Legal liabilities and responsibilities for athletic program staff.
  • Local community resources, regional community services programs, and regional training programs.
  • Techniques and practices for efficient and cost effective management of resources.
  • Principles and practices of administrative management, including personnel rules, cost accounting, budgets, payroll, purchasing, planning, contracting, records management, and project management.
  • Safety rules and regulations, occupational hazards, and safety precautions in public facilities.
  • Skill in:

  • Interpreting and applying ASA program standards, applicable federal and state rules and regulations, and MPS policies and procedures.
  • Coordinating and administering educational, student services, and school support programs.
  • Managing and coordinating sports and athletic support programs.
  • Promoting a positive sports and recreation environment and good personal behavior.
  • Promoting and enforcing safety standards and practices.
  • Using courtesy and respect in interactions with students, athletes and parents.
  • Identifying problems and opportunities, and developing solutions.
  • Assessing and prioritizing multiple tasks, projects and demands.
  • Researching, collecting, analyzing, and preparing data; and generating reports.
  • Using initiative and independent judgment within established procedural guidelines.
  • Planning, organizing, and coordinating the work of assigned staff and work groups.
  • Operating a personal computer utilizing standard and specialized software.
  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with co-workers, public officials, and representatives from other regional agencies.
  • Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.
  • LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS 

    A valid North Dakota State Driver's License is required.  Preference given for Teacher/Educator certification from ESPB and NDDPI administrator credentials. 

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT


    Work is performed in a standard office environment.

    This position is subject to veteran's preference.
