    The main goal of automation is to improve efficiency, accuracy, and speed in business processes, ultimately leading to increased productivity and reduced costs.

    Design and plan electrical systems, including power, communications, and data.
    Design systems using PLC programs, robotics, and sensor technologies.
    Maintain systems for installation, integration, and operation.
    Maintain and upgrade control systems.
    Use engineering design software to create, modify, and analyze project schematics.
    Research and develop modern technologies.
    Develop appropriate documentation.
    Establish equipment specifications and requirements.
    Perform safety inspections and craft risk assessments.
    Perform preventative maintenance and repairs.
    Identify, evaluate, and troubleshoot electrical issues.
    Design and implement data communication protocols.
    Implement best practices.
    Plan, organize, and direct project activities.
    Conduct research, analyze, and evaluate information.
    Develop project plans.
    Coordinate, monitor, and evaluate project deliverables.

    Design and develop software solutions in support of automation and robotics automation software and serve as a technical resource for the automation team.

    Design, develop, test, and deploy software engineering solutions.

    Manage automation software development projects, develop, and maintain automation software standards, and gather business requirements, perform feasibility studies, and prototype solutions.

    Assist with the creation of automation prototypes.
    Understand safety procedures and train team members in safe work practices.
    Lead trouble shooting efforts on automation projects.
    Process and document automation test plans.
    Lead or participate in an estimation process.
    Perform other duties as assigned.

    The ideal skill set for someone moving into Automation Engineering roles includes:
    Excellent computer skills - particularly in programming and software development. Many aspects of the role of an Automation Engineer require the use of a computer.
    Equipment troubleshooting skills - as you will often need to debug or troubleshoot an existing system.

    Communication skills - will be needed to be able to explain novel and complex ideas to stakeholders of all levels and within multidisciplinary teams.

    Written communication skills will also be needed for record keeping and documentation, a key part of these regulated industries.
    Problem-solving and creative thinking - will be required to troubleshoot problems as they arise and find effective solutions.
    Organizational skills - to map out projects, prioritize workload and keep accurate documentation.
    Flexibility & Adaptability - must be able to keep up with the latest techniques and technologies as they develop.

    Education and/or ExperienceBS degree in engineering from four-year college or university and/or two to four years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

    Language SkillsAbility to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

    Mathematical SkillsAbility to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.

    Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
    Reasoning AbilityAbility to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

    Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

    Computer SkillsMust have a working knowledge of Microsoft Office software.
