    Shift: Monday – Friday 8:15AM - 4:45 PM

    Job Summary: Join our mission at Meristem to prepare young adults on the autism spectrum for social and economic independence. As a Culinary Life Skills Instructor, you will have a key role in nurturing culinary expertise and life skills among our students. This position demands creativity in the culinary arts, a grasp of "Farm to Table" principles, and an emphasis on nutritional balance to guide students on a path toward a well-rounded life. Engage with students to demonstrate how food is not just nourishment for the body but also a catalyst for strength, growth, and connection. Teaching food preparation, cooking techniques, and ensuring kitchen safety are integral aspects of the culinary experience at Meristem. Experience in catering would be advantageous for this role.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Develop and implement a culinary curriculum emphasizing "Farm to Table" practices and nutritional balance.
    • Teach food preparation, cooking techniques, and kitchen safety to students.
    • Engage with students to demonstrate how food choices impact overall health and wellness.
    • Prepare developmental curriculum and implement daily instruction.
    • Assess students' abilities, connect them with projects and lessons to develop their skills, and track progress.
    • Record daily notes based on students' goals and objectives.
    • Develop individualized plans for students as needed.
    • Maintain and manage classroom/dorm room spaces and materials.
    • Attend daily and weekly staff meetings and check-ins.
    • Participate in staff training and practice the Meristem method.
    • Develop a professional growth plan with the supervisor.
    • Engage with parents as directed.
    • Build and manage budgets for class materials.
    • Support onboarding of new students and staff.
    • Engage in hands-on support of students in hygiene and general needs.
    • Familiarize and engage with foundational educational materials (Waldorf Education, Transformative movement education, Ruskin Mill).
    • Collaborate with colleagues on educational offerings.
    • Enhance skills as an instructor to the highest level.
    • Teach program-specific content like hygiene and medical support.
    • Implement program-oriented approaches.
    • Participate in student substitutions as needed.
    • Maintain classroom culture and track student progress.
    • Collaborate with colleagues and engage in professional development.

    Qualifications:

    • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in culinary education or related field.
    • Minimum 2 years of experience in culinary education or direct support.
    • 1-2 years experience working with a comparable participant population to meristem or similar experience.
    • Familiarity with Waldorf, Transformative Movement Education, or Ruskin Mill educational approaches preferred.

    Physical Requirements:

    • This role involves constant movement, lifting (up to 40 pounds), and standing for extended periods.

    Additional Requirements:

    • California Food Handlers card or Servsafe Certification.
    • Experience in catering.
    • Strong interpersonal skills to interact effectively with young adults on the autism spectrum.
    • Demonstrated stability in previous employment history.
