    Default job background
    Description

Retama Equine Hospital is seeking an equine surgeon to join our team The ideal candidate is not only passionate about providing exceptional medicine and care to our patients and clients but is also ready to take on the challenge of growing our surgical caseload.

Founded in 1995, not only are we an equine exclusive practice, but we are the only multi-doctor equine practice in our area.

Located near San Antonio Texas, where the city life, hill country, rivers, and state park come together, there is a vibrant cultural scene, with annual festivals, art galleries, museums, and a variety of culinary experiences.

San Antonio and its surrounding area boast a diverse and extensive horse population that perform a variety of disciplines including but not limited to rodeo, racing, eventing, dressage, and hunter-jumper.

We have an exceptional staff, and each team member is valued for the strengths they bring to our hospital.

The hospital is staffed 24-hours, and the support team consists of 20+ technicians, office assistants, barn assistants, and a practice manager.

Our building consists of three stocks, three ICU stalls, 20 hospital stalls, 4 isolation stalls and 16 paddocks. Our hospital can provide arthroscopy (Arthrex-6410), laparoscopy, and soft-tissue surgeries.

We are equipped with 2 Sound Radiograph mobile units; multiple ultrasound units for reproduction (SonoSite), tendon and general sonograms (GE), Olympus 1M and 3M scope for endoscopy/gastroscopy, multiple PowerFloat, Shockwave and Sound Smart RLT regenerative laser, biological therapies (IRAP, PRP, and Pro-Stride), Lameness Locator, and on-site lab services (including Coggins Lab).

Our surgical area includes 2 induction / recovery stalls and utilizes a Shanks (dorsal/lateral, scissors-base) equine surgical table.

We currently run anesthesia with GKX, using a Vetland-V1410 anesthesia monitor system, but have plans for acquiring a new Mallard Anesthesia Ventilation System in 2024.

Our surgical caseload consists of both emergency and elective cases, and the candidate would be supported to build a caseload for orthopedic and soft tissue cases.

In addition to growing the surgical caseload for the hospital, the candidate will be expected to complete general practice work for the hospital (the percentage of time dedicated to GP work will depend on the time dedicated to the candidate's surgical caseload).

The candidate will rotate among the other veterinarians for primary on-call duties and will be one-of-two expected to serve surgical on-call duties.

When the candidate is providing surgical work for the hospital, the candidate will have our "surgical team" of staff available to them - this generally includes our on-call technician, at least one additional technician on staff, and available intern(s).

If an intern is not available, the additional staff member available for assistance will default to the primary on-call DVM.

Qualified candidates are not required to be board certified but must be board eligible.

As we continue to remodel our surgery suite, the candidate will have the ability to provide input to future changes and upgrades, in collaboration with the hospital leadership team.

We offer competitive compensation and CE allowance, coverage of state licensing fees, AAEP and AVMA membership fees, medical, dental and vision insurance, PLIT, and general support for your professional goals.
