    Trainee 1 (Grade NS):

    Trainee 2 (Grade NS):

    A qualifying bachelor's degree or higher degree* and one year of professional experience in assessing the impact of toxic substances on public health; OR a bachelor's degree or higher degree supplemented by 30 qualifying* semester credit hours and one year of professional qualifying experience.


    Public Health Specialist 1 (Environment) (Grade 18): A qualifying bachelor's or higher degree* and two years of professional experience in assessing the impact of toxic substances on public health; OR a bachelor's degree including or supplemented by 30 qualifying* semester credit hours and two years of professional qualifying experience; OR a qualifying* master's degree and one year of professional qualifying experience; OR a master's degree including or supplemented by 30 qualifying* semester credit hours and one year of professional qualifying experience.

    Public Health Specialist 1 (Environment) (Grade 18): A medical examination will be required prior to appointment to ensure that you are able to satisfactorily perform the duties of these positions with or without reasonable accommodation.

    Transfer Candidates:

    Current NYS Department of Health (DOH) employee with permanent or contingent permanent status as a Public Health Specialist (Environment) Grade 18 or Public Health Specialist Trainee (Environment) Grade NS; OR current New York State employee with one year or more of permanent or contingent permanent, competitive service in a title eligible to transfer, via 70.4 to a Public Health Specialist 1 (Environment) Grade 18, or a Public Health Specialist 1 (Environment) Trainee, Grade NS.


    Reassignment:

    Current New York State Department of Health employee with one year of permanent or contingent-permanent service as a Public Health Specialist (Environment) Grade 18.


    Preferred Qualifications:
    The preferred candidate with have a background in geology, hydrogeology, engineering, chemistry, environmental sciences, or similar fields. They will also have experience with environmental investigations, evaluating environmental sampling data, and assessing human exposure pathways. Good written and oral communication skills are preferred.

    Duties Description Do you want to help communities impacted by environmental contamination? Here in the Bureau of Environmental Exposure Investigation (BEEI), we investigate and evaluate exposures to environmental contamination, and recommend actions to prevent or minimize exposures to protect public health.

    We also educate communities on potential exposures and how to reduce exposures to chemicals.

    Our work is accomplished by collaborating with agency partners such as the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation; United States Environmental Protection Agency; Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR); other NYS Department Of Health bureaus; and local health departments to engage with citizen's groups, businesses and residents.

    Key programs we work with are the State superfunds, Federal Superfunds, Brownfield Cleanup programs, and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry's (ATSDR) APPLETREE cooperative agreement program.

    We also work on emerging issues and initiatives that could impact public health due to chemical contamination.

    The duties for this position include evaluating a variety of environmental work document, conducting site visits, collecting samples, evaluating sample results, and providing health-related recommendations.

    Engaging with the public is another important aspect of the role, requiring staff attendance at public meetings and availability sessions, along with addressing public concerns and questions via phone or written correspondence.

    Some travel is required, but is not extensive.

    Additional Comments Contingent Permanent, competitive, full-time, appointments. Occasional travel throughout New York State to areas not served by public transportation may be required (10%). Transfer candidates may be asked for their social security number to verify eligibility.
