    Position Summary & Responsibilities:

    Position Summary:

    This Engineering Technician Supervisor position is located in Shawnee, KS, and is within the Bureau of Construction & Materials. This position provides critical welding inspections at fabrication plants and will develop a Certified Weld Inspector (CWI) Training Program for future KDOT CWIs. The Engineering Technician Supervisor will also sample, test, and evaluate materials that will be used in KDOT construction projects as well as oversee the training of new CWI Trainees at KDOT. This position will involve travel to Prestressed Beam Fabrication Plants, Precast Concrete Plants, Steel Bridge Fabrication Plants, and KDOT construction sites.

    NOTE: The employee in this position must attain Certified Weld Inspector (CWI), American Segmental Bridge Institute (ASBI) Grouting Training, American Concrete Institute (ACI) Concrete Field Tester and Hardened Concrete Properties, and American Welding Society (AWS) Certified Weld Educator (CWE) certifications within 6 months of hire, unless the time is extended by the Bureau Chief. These certifications must be maintained.

    Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Develops and oversees KDOT's policy on Weld Procedures, provides expertise, and mentors KDOT's Certified Weld Inspectors, Engineering Designers, and KDOT Partners (KTA, contractors, consultants, fabricators) dealing with Weld procedures and fabrication anomalies of structural elements.
  • Performs inspection and/or testing of structural steel and metal fabrication.
  • Performs inspection, testing and/or sampling of other project related materials, including plain and epoxy coated reinforcing steel, concrete, and corrugated metal pipe, fencing materials, cement, painted products, precast concrete products, fasteners, non-structural fabricated items, and galvanized products.
  • Performs other structural inspections to determine the acceptability of the construction process, confers with KDOT Field Personnel and KDOT Bridge Design to ensure that KDOT, ASTM, AASHTO, AWS and ASBI specifications are being followed.
  • Documents the work of the producer/supplier from raw materials to finished product ready for delivery to a jobsite.

    Qualifications:

    Minimum Qualifications :

  • Five years of experience in engineering technical support.
  • Five years of independent inspection work as a Certified Weld Inspector.
  • Education may be substituted for experience as determined relevant by the agency. Transcripts are required for education to be considered.
  • Valid Driver's License at time of appointment.

    • Preferred Qualifications :

  • Knowledge of mathematics and formulas to perform complex calculations for preparing inspection reports and documentation is preferred.
  • Knowledge of operational rules, regulations, procedures, and specifications, to carry out inspection assignments is preferred.
