    Overview:

    THE NEIGHBORHOOD DEFENDER SERVICE OF HARLEM (NDS) is a community-based, client-centered, holistic public defense office located in Harlem, providing criminal, civil, and family representation. NDS clients are represented by multidisciplinary teams. NDS is accepting applications for the position of Senior Accountant.

    The Senior Accountant will ensure all compliance with respect to finances within the NDS, Harlem office. Reporting to the Controller, the Senior Accountant will work closely with finance members, executive management, the payroll department and all other required departments to ensure timely and accurate financial reporting, and maintenance of financial data within the Financial Edge reporting system. The senior accountant will also be responsible for accounting and banking, assisting with filing invoices for payments and entering payroll registers.

    Responsibilities:
    • Analyzes transactions and assists in the preparation of financial reports.
    • Participates in monthly, quarterly, and annual closes, analyzes results, and ensures accuracy of financial information.
    • Handling of allocations in accounts payable and general ledger.
    • Manages the organizations AMEX credit card.
    • In conjunction with the Assistant Controller and Controller, maintains the general ledger.
    • Reconciles accounts payable and accounts receivable monthly.
    • Manages balance sheet and income statements, as well as assist with daily cash reporting.
    • Prepares schedules for annual audit and provides information to auditors.
    • Prepares and provide information to various departments and practices.
    • Prepares monthly, all bank account reconciliations.
    • Maintains and balances subsidiary accounts by verifying, allocating, posting, and reconciling transactions.
    • Resolving discrepancies as needed.
    • Completes payroll journal entries for import to the general ledger.
    • Protects organizations value by keeping information confidential.
    • Assists Finance team members as needed.
    Qualifications:
    • Experience with government grant administration and accounting practices.
    • Experience with NYCs HHS Accelerator and NYCs PASSPORT systems preferred.
    • Nonprofit accounting experience is preferred.
    • Knowledge and experience with Financial Edge accounting software preferred.
    • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
    • Accounting and analytical skills.

    • Highly organized and meticulous.
    • Excellent goalsetting, prioritization, and decision-making skills.
    • Excellent communication (written and oral) skills.
    • Ability to collaborate effectively with diverse teams.
    • Bachelors degree in accounting or finance.

    Compensation: Compensation is commensurate with experience. Full medical and dental benefits, as well as retirement plan with company match, robust time off perks, paid parental leave and other benefits, are provided. The salary range for this position is $77,380 $95,679.

    $ 92,020 (about $1k for each additional year)

    The salary, benefits, and employment policies relevant to this position are governed by the CBA between NDS and the NDS Union, part of ALAA UAW 2325.
