The Director of Spiritual Care and Education is responsible for the provision of spiritual care to diverse patients, families and staff; for general oversight of the Clinical Pastoral Education program; and for effective communication and liaising with religious communities and clergy within the Boston area when appropriate.
At BIDMC the Department of Spiritual Care resides within Patient Care Services, along with Nursing, Social Work, Interpreter Services and Volunteer Services. The Director reports to the Senior Director for Social Work and Patient and Family Engagement.
As a member of the spiritual care team, you will provide spiritual care services to patients, families and staff throughout the medical center. Chaplains are valued members of the multi-disciplinary team participating in family meetings, end of life and goals of care conversations, and consulting on ethical, spiritual and faith based issues that have implications for patient care. Chaplains also assume leadership roles in case conferences, wellness rounds and staff debriefs.
**Job Description:**
**Essential Responsibilities:**
+ Ensures the delivery of a complete spiritual care program to diverse patients, families and staff.
+ Plans, coordinates, and supervises performance of religious rites, sacraments and celebrations at the bedside and, when appropriate, for the larger hospital community.
+ Supervises provision of spiritual care and related services by professional staff chaplains, clergy, lay volunteers and students.
+ Supervises the ACPE Certified Educator and Program Administrator, and liaises with the Professional Advisory Group to ensure a robust and high quality Clinical Pastoral Education program.
+ Has full responsibility for planning, monitoring and managing department budget and special funds (gifts). Collaborates with the office of Development to identify donors and opportunities for fund raising.
+ Provides direct spiritual care to patients, families and/or staff as a practicing clinician.
+ Develops, implements and evaluates programs for spiritual care, implementing changes as needed to improve effectiveness and quality of services.
+ Committed to team and individual staff chaplain professional development. Monitors and evaluates department database and departmental staffing needs.
+ Develops and maintains internal policies and procedures and departmental compliance with organizational policies and procedures. Ensures departmental compliance with JCAHO, ACPE, and all other regulatory body standards.
+ Is liaison to BIDMC leadership and Incident Commanders during normal operations and critical incidents; liaises with the BILH network leadership and helps coordinate network-level spiritual care initiatives as appropriate.
+ Supports an interdisciplinary approach to spiritual care. Coordinates programming and continuing education with departments of Social Work, Volunteer Services, Palliative Care, Nursing, Medicine and others. Participates in institutional committees such as the Ethics Advisory Committee, DEI Steering Committee, and others. Stays current with regard to best practices in spiritual care.
+ Has the authority to direct and support employees daily work activities. Has the direct responsibility to undertake the following employment actions: hiring, termination, corrective action and performance reviews. Direct Reports: More than 7 Indirect Reports: None
+ Assists in planning, monitoring and/or managing budget in functional area of department.
**Required Qualifications:**
+ Master's degree in Divinity or the equivalent required.
+ 2-4 units Clinical Pastoral Education completed; board certification eligible. (If not board certified, certification by APC, NACC, NAJC or CASC expected within two years of accepting position.
+ 5-8 years related work experience required and 1-3 years supervisory/management experience required
+ Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
+ Advanced skills with Microsoft applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access and other web-based applications. May produce complex documents, perform analysis and maintain databases.

**Physical Nature of the Job:**
+ Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force frequently to move objects. Some elements of the job are sedentary, but the employee will be required to stand for periods of time or move through out the hospital campus
