    Position Purpose

    The First-Year Experience Peer Mentor Program is designed to provide opportunities for undergraduate students to serve in a mentorship capacity to all first-year students enrolled in First-Year Seminars (UNIV The purpose is to welcome all new students to the University of Central Missouri via the First-Year Seminar course and give them an opportunity to build a community and transition to their new university home. Dedicated student leaders are needed to serve as Peer Mentors to make this program a success. This leadership position is an excellent opportunity to get involved and welcome new students to Central Missouri's campus.
    Peer Mentors will be assigned to a First-Year Seminar course which includes being assigned to a faculty member, whom they will work with to guide and assist new students by introducing them to UCM. In addition, students selected for this position will be expected to:
  • Serve as a mentor to first-year students enrolled in a First-Year Seminar
  • Assist First-Year Seminar (UNIV 1400) instructors with the incorporation of co-curricular activities
  • Support the academic success of first-year students
  • Connect students to faculty, academic advisors, staff, and University resources
  • Aid in the overall transition of first-year students into the UCM community
  • Encourage involvement in University organizations and campus events
  • Foster "ownership" in the collegiate experience
  • Represent First-Year Programs at campus events
  • Attend every UNIV 1400 class meeting in the fall, spring, or summer
  • Participate in the required co-curricular events associated with First-Year Programs including but not limited to Welcome Week events, financial literacy and financial aid workshops, community service projects, academic success workshops, and other designated events
  • Complete one-on-one meetings with students and report on each of your mentees to ensure a successful transition to college and engagement with the UCM community
  • Promote weekly social and academic events for UNIV 1400 students
  • Attend required Peer Mentor meetings and training
  • Complete the Certified Peer Educator training offered through the Success Advising Center during the Spring or Fall Semesters.
  • Contribute to and participate in the overall mission of the First-Year Experience program
  • Education & Formal Training High school diploma or equivalent, Credit Hours (Specify hours below) Computer Skills Word-Processing, Spreadsheet, Presentation Experience Students must be considered sophomores by the time they begin filling the position. High school diploma or equivalent Licenses, Certificates, Registrations, & State/Federal Requirements of Position: Special Skills, Abilities, and Knowledge: Attention to detail, Communication skills, including oral, written, and/or nonverbal, Knowledge of a University environment preferred, Leadership skills: organization/meeting facilitation/project leadership, Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects and meet deadlines, Maintain confidentiality Physical & Environmental Factors: Lifting weight Special Working Conditions: Irregular work hours, Professional appearance
