    Robert A. Winn Diversity in Clinical Trials Award Program

    The Robert A. Winn Diversity in Clinical Trials Award Program was established in 2020 by the Bristol Myers Squibb Foundation (BMSF) as a bold program to increase diversity in clinical trials and transform the clinical research landscape. This initiative is comprised of the Robert A. Winn Career Development Award (Winn CDA) for early-stage investigator physicians who are underrepresented in medicine or who have a demonstrated commitment to increasing diversity in clinical research, and the Robert A. Winn Clinical Investigator Pathway Program (Winn CIPP) for medical students underrepresented in medicine.

    The goal of the Winn CDA is to train and develop a new generation of Community-oriented clinical trialists (COCT) who have the knowledge, skills, and commitment to become effective partners with communities to design and conduct clinical trials that will yield new treatments that are effective in all populations. The Winn CDA is a 2-year program designed to support the career development of early-stage investigator physicians to become independent clinical trial investigators who are engaged in advancing health equity through their research and mentoring.

    The goal of the Winn CIPP is to build a pathway of community-oriented clinical trialists of diverse backgrounds who are committed to increasing inclusion, equity, and diversity in the conduct of clinical and translational research. The program provides medical students a 6-week summer service-learning externship in community-based clinical research sites where they benefit from exposures to clinical research, community engagement experiences, and leadership development.

    Position Primary Purpose and General Responsibilities

    Please note this position is fully remote.

    Reporting to the Executive Director of the Robert A. Winn Diversity in Clinical Trials Award Program (Winn Awards), the Director of Development will be responsible for overseeing and executing the strategic planning, implementation, and management of fundraising and development initiatives for the Winn Awards. The Director of Development will play a critical role in driving sustainability and growth by identifying, cultivating, and stewarding relationships with donors, partners, and stakeholders. The Director of Development sets fundraising goals and collaborates closely with the team leadership and other departments to align fundraising efforts with the program's goals and objectives.

    Duties of this position are as follows:

    • Develop and implement comprehensive fundraising strategies to support the Winn Awards' goals and objectives

    • Create and implement fundraising strategies, in close partnership with the Executive Director and the Director of Communications and Marketing, that will increase the program's support from individuals, corporations, foundations, and other sources

    • Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with funding partners and stakeholders, and engage in personalized stewardship to ensure ongoing support and engagement

    • Collaborate with senior leadership to align development strategies with the program's goals for long-term sustainability
  • Identify and prioritize funding sources, including individual donors, corporate sponsors, foundations, and government grants
  • Build and maintain relationships with major donors, foundations, and other potential funding sources
  • Create and execute cultivation and stewardship plans to engage donors and enhance their involvement and commitment to the program
  • Develop personalized approaches to acknowledge and recognize donors' contributions
  • Plan, coordinate, and execute fundraising events, campaigns, and initiatives to engage donors and raise funds
  • Represent the organization at networking events, conferences, and meetings to expand its visibility and donor base
  • Research and identify grant opportunities, write compelling proposals, and manage grant reporting requirements
  • Monitor fundraising results and financial performance, analyzing trends and making data-driven decisions to optimize fundraising strategies
  • Utilize data and analytics to evaluate the effectiveness of fundraising efforts, identify trends, and make data-driven recommendations
  • Set annual and long-term fundraising goals and monitor progress toward achieving targets
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant fundraising regulations, legal requirements, and ethical standards

  • Minimum Hiring Standards

    • Demonstrated commitment to racial and health equity

    • Master's Degree and a minimum of 5 years professional experience in nonprofit management, business administration, communications, marketing or another related field

    • Proven track record of successful fundraising, development and donor relations including experience with major gifts, grants, corporate and foundation partnerships, donor stewardship and strategic planning

    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, capable of building and maintaining relationships with partners and stakeholders

    • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey the Winn Awards' goals and impact to diverse audiences

    • Experience with fundraising tools, donor management software, and fundraising and other platforms that support development efforts

    Preferred Hiring Standards

    • Excellent time management and prioritization skills, ability to work well and remain collegial under pressure while meeting tight deadlines

    • Strategic thinking and ability to translate vision into actionable plans

    • Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and key program stakeholders (both internal and external)

    • Ability to adapt to new technologies, trends, and donor preferences, as well as innovative thinking for creating new fundraising strategies

    • Knowledge of ethical fundraising practices and compliance regulations

    • Can work as part of a virtual team to accomplish common goals and objectives
