    Nature of Work

    This position provides one-on-one assistance to children with moderate to severe special needs participating in recreational programs.

    The incumbents also assist with organizing, modifying and leading recreational activities and events for all groups and are generally supervised by the Park Manager at the site to which they are assigned.

    Illustrative Examples of Essential Duties


    • Supervisesoneormoreparticipantsdependinguponparticipants'individualneeds,and/orneed,insports,games,recreationandathleticactivities,includingfieldtrips,etc.
    • Evaluatesparticipants'skilllevelandassessescapacitytoparticipateinrecreationalactivities.
    • Implementsbehaviorplans,asneeded,createsandsafeguardsappropriatedocumentation.
    • Assistsparticipantstoadapttoactivitiesandfacilitatessocialinteractions.
    • Conducts diversified recreational activities which may include but are not limited to: music, dance,arts and crafts, swimming,athletics,games,and fitnessprograms for all ages and abilities;mayberequiredtopreparefieldsforvariousorganizedgames.
    • Mayassistinpreparingattendanceandactivityreports
    • Compilesandretainsrecordsandreceiptsasdirected.
    • Adherestoallchecklists,policiesandprocedures.
    • Providesexcellentcustomerservice;reportscomplaintstosupervisorsandrespondstoinquiriesfromthepublic;advisesthepublicregardingexistingactivities.
    • WorkstowardfurtheranceoftheCity'sandDepartment'sMissionStatements
    • Enforcessafetyandprogram/facilityrulesandregulations.
    • Workisevaluatedthroughobservationoftheirabilitytoestablishrapportwiththechildrentheyworkwithandtheirparents/caretakers,anddetail,accuracyandtimelinessofwrittenreports.
    • Administersbasicfirstaidasneeded.
    • Performs related work as required.
    Minimum Requirements


    • AssociatesdegreeorequivalentinTherapeuticRecreation,SpecialEducation,Recreation,orrelatedfield,and/ortwoyears'experienceworkingdirectlywithchildrenand/oradultswithspecialneedsrequired.
    • Shift work may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
    • CPR and First Aid certifications must obtain within 6 months of hire.
    • Basic swimming skills.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

    • Musthavetheuseofsensoryskillstocommunicateandinteractwithotheremployees andthepublic,inpersonoronthetelephone.
    • Physicalcapabilitytouseandoperatesomeofficerelatedequipment,suchas,butnotlimitedtocomputer,calculator,copier,andfax machine.
    • Significant standing, walking, moving, climbing, carrying, bending, kneeling. Some crawling, reaching, handling, sitting, standing, pushing, and pulling.

    • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with elected officials, coworkers, the press the general public and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability, political affiliation, gender identity or sexual orientation.
    • Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of all city ethics and conflicts of interest policies. Strong understanding of ethical behavior is required.
    • Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance.
    • Performs related work as required
    • Reports to work as directed during an emergency as an essential employee of the City of Miami Beach
