    Summary

    The Family Intervention Specialist provides short-term family counseling for clients referred to the Juvenile Probation Department, along with consultation, education, and training to the department's staff and juvenile justice system stakeholders on adolescent development and behavioral health concerns, to ensure that BARJ objectives are realized.
    Essential Duties
    • Provide confidential counseling to at-risk juveniles, and their families.
    • Maintain confidential progress notes on all sessions.
    • Be available to families for phone consultations and appointments outside normal work hours (i.e., evening appointments).
    • Meet with supervisor on a weekly basis to review all cases, and meet daily with supervisor on an as-needed basis.
    • Attend court hearings and advise the court on appropriate therapeutic interventions.
    • Provide support and advice during emergency situations (e.g., facilitate crisis intervention and provide support to juveniles, their families and probation officers during these situations).
    • Attend System of Care and single plan of care meetings for JPO-involved youths with mental and/or behavioral health problems, as needed.
    • Read case files, psychological and psychiatric evaluations, and school reports of juveniles referred to the Family Intervention Unit for treatment and/or consultation.
    • Meet with families to go over psychological and psychiatric evaluations and school reports at the request of the court and/or probation officer.
    • Provide continuing services to juveniles past the age of 18 or after their release from the jurisdiction of the court, as requested.
    • Assist in training new probation officers.
    • Attend continuing education courses that are germane and pertinent to the populations served or as requested by Administration.
    • Consult with probation officers, court personnel, human services and mental health staff, service providers and families of youth with behavioral health problems to determine and obtain appropriate community-based services for these youths.
    • Make referrals to the county's Behavioral Health Children's Review Team in order to access community-based mental health services
    • Set up and attend interagency meetings for youth with significant mental health problems as needed.
    • Work with other JPO staff to coordinate and provide training for JPO staff and stakeholders on mental health issues and services.
    • Ensure that relevant and up-to-date information is readily available to JPO staff, juveniles, and families regarding available mental health resources.
    • Inform JPO staff and stakeholders of updates and changes to the county's behavioral health system and service providers.
    • Participate in internal JPO committees and workgroups, as deemed appropriate
    • Help educate other systems and the community on the mission, purpose, and limits of the juvenile justice system and how this system can work together with others to develop appropriate plans for juveniles and their families.
    • Help facilitate the use of county-provided counseling services for departmental staff.
    • Participate in meetings with other County agencies, such as System of Care, MH/IDD's Children's Subcommittee of the Children's Advisory Board, CYF's Multi-Dimensional Team, MH/IDD's Clinical Case Review, and the Children's Review Team, to discuss juvenile justice and behavioral health issues.
    • Perform other duties, tasks, and special projects, as required.
    Qualifications/Preferred Skills, Knowledge & Experience

    • Masters degree in social work, psychology, human services, counseling education and child development and family studies or applied behavioral science.

    • At least four years of job-related experience.

    • A high level of professional ethics.

    • Ability to maintain confidential information and handle confidential matters.

    • Shall follow the code of ethics and practice standards of the American Counseling Association (ACA)and the State Board of Social Works, Marriage and Family Therapists and Professional Counselors.

    • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

    • Excellent interpersonal skills.

    • Ability to work independently and proceed with objectives.

    • Ability to work as part of a team.

    • A valid driver's license is required.

    Preferred Skills, Knowledge & Experience:

    • PA Licensure as a Social Worker, Professional Counselor or Marriage and Family Therapist.

    • Experience in a clinical setting working with adults and adolescents.

    • Ability to follow office protocols.

    • Ability to handle and resolve recurring problems.

    • Ability to establish priorities.

    • Accuracy and detail-orientation.

    • Excellent organizational and time management skills.

    • General knowledge and understanding of County of Chester policies and procedures

    Physical Demands:
    While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to sit, walk, stand, and talk or hear. Occasionally, employee will need to kneel, stoop, crouch or squat; climb stairs; drive a vehicle; and taste or smell. On rare occasions, the employee will need to work with arms above shoulder height and bend at the waist while working.

    • The Family Intervention therapists follow the regulations and principles outlined by the American Association of Family and Marriage Therapists and the Pennsylvania Psychological Association.
