Description
The main goal of this role is to facilitate communication among deaf and hard of hearing students in educational settings through sign language, oral interpretation, real-time captioning, and other necessary resources. Employees in this position utilize intermediate skills. Interpreters must follow the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) code of ethics and the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) guidelines. Work is supervised by certified teachers or school officials. Essential functions include interpreting, transliterating, and captioning.
Responsibilities and Qualifications
Examples of Essential Functions
- Provide interpreting and captioning services for deaf and hard of hearing individuals in educational settings.
- Interpret auditory information in various settings like classrooms, offices, and assemblies.
- Monitor student activities to ensure safety and proper conduct.
- Assist teachers in adapting content for deaf or hard of hearing students.
- Stay updated on current technology used in the school district.
- Attend training sessions to maintain technology skills.
- Participate in professional development activities related to sign language interpreting.
Marginal Functions
While these tasks are necessary, they are not essential for the role and can be performed by other team members.
Minimum Training and Experience
High school diploma or GED; at least one year of experience working with deaf or hard of hearing individuals in an educational setting. Must have an Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) Level 2.8 certification.

Sensory Requirements: Tasks require visual perception, oral communication, or sound discrimination.
Environmental Factors: Tasks are typically performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
