    Family Support Specialist

    This position is contingent on annual grant monies provided from DHHS/DSS division. Current funding
    is secured through June 30, 2026 with a new RFA coming in December 2025. This is a 32 hour/week
    position for 11 months (July off) per year.

    Salary:
    $21/hour = $32,018 plus benefits
    Role
    The Family Support Specialist is school-based and acts as a link between families, the school and the
    community. The Family Support Specialist provides child development information to parents including
    age-appropriate expectations, teaches parents positive parenting practices using the Triple P model and
    Circle of Parents model, and assists families in accessing community resources. The Support Specialist
    provides day to day management of the FUTuRES project, including all reporting to NCDSS. The
    Family Support Specialist reports directly to the Program Coordinator.
    Duties & Responsibilities

    • To act as the lead resource person on the Triple P and Circle of Parents curriculum.
    • To receive referrals to the program and assure follow-up with families through school and home
    visits.

    • To assist families in accessing local resources and coordinating activities.
    • To provide parent education and group family activities.
    • To organize student and/or parent support groups as necessary.
    • To organize natural learning opportunities for children involved in the program.
    • To gather data and other information as it relates to the project and maintain input into the project
    database.

    • To maintain accurate and current records on each family.
    • To always uphold a high level of professionalism in working with families, school personnel and
    community representatives.

    • To protect the rights of families by practicing a strict policy of confidentiality.
    • To attend professional development courses and workshops.
    • To provide day to day management of the budget.
    • To assist the Program Coordinator with grant reports and renewal contracts and grant
    applications.

    • Knowledge of parent education philosophies.
    • Knowledge of community resources.
    • Knowledge of research techniques and principles.
    • Knowledge of basic negotiating principles.
    • Skill in counseling.
    • Skill in project management.
    • Skills in compiling information and writing project reports.
    • Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with school personnel and external
    agencies.

    • Ability to communicate effectively orally.
    • Ability to communicate in writing, including correspondence with families and school staff.
    • Ability to use personal computer and learn related software as it applies to the job.
    • Ability to collect, compile, and interpret data.
    • Ability to manage budgets.
    • Ability to write project reports.
    • Ability to hold a valid NC driver's license.
    Minimum Requirements

    • Bachelor's degree in Social Work or a four-year degree with at least 2 years experience with at-risk families.
    • At least two years experience in working with at-risk families.
    • At least one year experience with project management.
    Special Requirements

    • Must be willing to work nights, weekends, and other unusual hours when necessary.
    • Must have access to transportation to conduct home visits and attend events and various meetings
    as requested.
